the muddy water flooded the restaurant as well.<br>The area behind the kitchen faces the hillside; there, between the concrete fence and the building, the water was waist-deep.<br>So the rain literally flowed through the building.<br>What really frayed my nerves wasn\u2019t even that, but that at 2 p.m., when the rain was coming down the hardest, the head of housekeeping \u2014 and the owner\u2019s husband echoing her \u2014 had the bright idea that I should go find the ladder in the garden, now, in the rain, because Room 1 was leaking.<br>I told them to close that room: the leak was above the shower, it wouldn\u2019t cause damage; the rain would stop by tomorrow, the room would dry, and in peacetime we\u2019d assess the damage in the attic.<br>Until 2:30 I hauled the ladder, getting drenched to a pulp under the pouring monsoon rain.<br>Then reception called to say the restaurant was going under.<br>By 3 p.m. I had already walked twice through the waist-deep flood behind the house; after that I started hunting for a pump, but the pump\u2019s sensor had a contact fault.<br>I fought with it for half an hour while the bosses were looking for me.<br>In the end the pump started in the cook\u2019s hands, and nobody understood why I had been fumbling with it.<br>By 5:30 p.m. the pump had removed about three quarters of the water from along the kitchen wall (then it stopped); after that we could start cleaning the kitchen.<br>At 5:35 p.m. the owner\u2019s husband stated that, by the way, both pumps had contact faults.<br>At 6 p.m. I finally took off the wet clothes (luckily it was warm).<br>After a long, hot shower I was in bed by 8.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">September 21, 2025. Sunday. Les Baux-de-Provence<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mousson dans la cuisine<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">En quelques minutes, une belle journ\u00e9e a vir\u00e9 \u00e0 la survie.<br>De l\u2019eau jusqu\u2019\u00e0 la taille, des pompes capricieuses, et un escalier \u00e0 porter sous une mousson \u2014 le tout sous une pluie \u00e9tonnamment douce.<br>Notes d\u2019un dimanche horrible o\u00f9 la pluie a litt\u00e9ralement travers\u00e9 le b\u00e2timent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ouh, quelle journ\u00e9e horrible.<br>La pluie a commenc\u00e9 \u00e0 midi.<br>\u00c0 13 h, j\u2019ai troqu\u00e9 mes chaussures contre des bottes en caoutchouc.<br>\u00c0 15 h, l\u2019eau a commenc\u00e9 \u00e0 entrer dans mes bottes \u00e0 cause du niveau \u00e9lev\u00e9, et entre-temps m\u00eame mon sous-v\u00eatement \u00e9tait tremp\u00e9.<br>Heureusement, la pluie \u00e9tait ti\u00e8de.<br>Ce n\u2019\u00e9tait pas de la pluie, c\u2019\u00e9tait une mousson.<br>Lors d\u2019une forte journ\u00e9e d\u2019hiver, il tombe deux centim\u00e8tres.<br>Ici, aujourd\u2019hui, jusqu\u2019\u00e0 17 h 30, il est tomb\u00e9 vingt centim\u00e8tres.<br>\u00c0 14 h 30, les \u00e9vacuations d\u2019eaux us\u00e9es de la cuisine se sont mises \u00e0 refouler et \u00e0 jaillir comme des fontaines ; l\u2019eau boueuse a inond\u00e9 aussi le restaurant.<br>L\u2019arri\u00e8re de la cuisine donne sur le flanc de la colline ; l\u00e0, entre la cl\u00f4ture en b\u00e9ton et le b\u00e2timent, l\u2019eau montait jusqu\u2019\u00e0 la taille.<br>Donc la pluie a litt\u00e9ralement travers\u00e9 le b\u00e2timent.<br>Ce qui m\u2019a vraiment mis les nerfs en pelote, ce n\u2019est m\u00eame pas \u00e7a, mais qu\u2019\u00e0 14 h, quand il pleuvait le plus fort, la cheffe des femmes de m\u00e9nage \u2014 et le mari du propri\u00e9taire qui r\u00e9p\u00e9tait ses phrases \u2014 a eu l\u2019id\u00e9e g\u00e9niale que je devais chercher l\u2019\u00e9chelle dans le jardin, maintenant, sous la pluie, parce que la chambre 1 prenait l\u2019eau.<br>Je leur ai dit de fermer cette chambre : l\u2019\u00e9coulement \u00e9tait au-dessus de la douche, \u00e7a ne causerait pas de d\u00e9g\u00e2ts ; demain la pluie s\u2019arr\u00eaterait, la chambre s\u00e9cherait, et en temps calme on \u00e9valuerait les dommages au grenier.<br>Jusqu\u2019\u00e0 14 h 30, sous la mousson battante, j\u2019ai port\u00e9 l\u2019\u00e9chelle en \u00e9tant tremp\u00e9 jusqu\u2019aux os.<br>Puis la r\u00e9ception a appel\u00e9 pour dire que le restaurant partait \u00e0 la d\u00e9rive.<br>\u00c0 15 h, j\u2019avais d\u00e9j\u00e0 travers\u00e9 deux fois l\u2019inondation jusqu\u2019\u00e0 la taille derri\u00e8re la maison ; ensuite, j\u2019ai cherch\u00e9 une pompe, mais le capteur de la pompe avait un faux contact.<br>J\u2019ai lutt\u00e9 pendant une demi-heure pendant que les patrons me cherchaient.<br>Au final, la pompe a d\u00e9marr\u00e9 entre les mains du cuisinier, et personne n\u2019a compris pourquoi je m\u2019y prenais si mal.<br>Jusqu\u2019\u00e0 17 h 30, la pompe a \u00e9vacu\u00e9 environ les trois quarts de l\u2019eau le long du mur de la cuisine (puis elle s\u2019est arr\u00eat\u00e9e) ; apr\u00e8s cela, on a pu commencer \u00e0 nettoyer la cuisine.<br>\u00c0 17 h 35, le mari de la propri\u00e9taire a constat\u00e9 qu\u2019au fait, les deux pompes avaient un faux contact.<br>\u00c0 18 h, j\u2019ai enfin enlev\u00e9 mes v\u00eatements mouill\u00e9s (heureusement il faisait doux).<br>Apr\u00e8s une longue douche chaude, j\u2019\u00e9tais au lit \u00e0 20 h.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">21 septembre 2025.
