Pont du Gard is more than a postcard-perfect UNESCO site: it\u2019s a slow day of walks, rocks, swims and a little time travel. If you like big stories carved in stone and quietly flowing water, this place will win you over fast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Where is it?<br>On the southern edge of France, roughly in the middle of the coast, about fifty kilometres from the sea and twenty kilometres from the towns of N\u00eemes and Avignon. It lies in a valley between limestone hills that industrialisation seems to have forgotten. Spanning the valley is a two-storey viaduct over the River Gardon, built by the Romans to operate the water supply system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What will we see?<br>Pine and olive forests, a hiking\/visitor area, rocks, and a bridge that erosion seems to have forgotten.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">How did it get there?<br>In southern France, in pretty much any village you stop in, you\u2019re almost guaranteed to find some relic from Roman times. So, as a bit of an outsider, I have the feeling that this whole region was dragged up out of the marshes by the Romans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What\u2019s its significance nowadays?<br>Yes, you can find traces of the Roman era almost anywhere within a twenty-kilometre radius, but nothing this big \u2013 and especially nothing in such good condition. That\u2019s also because later centuries went on using it. In the Middle Ages they even added another bridge in front of it \u2013 or rather, they widened the existing structure at the level of the lower row of arches so that you could cross the valley not only on foot but also with a cart. Today the area within a one-kilometre radius of the bridge is closed off \u2013 that\u2019s where the official car parks and campsites are. In a search engine, it\u2019s worth typing \u201cmus\u00e9e Pont du Gard\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What does the tourist information point recommend?<br>Exactly the visitor centre mentioned two lines above. You can tell they\u2019re aiming mainly at families: it\u2019s not just an exhibition space (which explains how the site came to be), but also a large, three-dimensional experience zone where you can play; as the official brochure puts it:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What did I go to see?<br>The wild beach under the foot of the bridge, which is neither fenced off nor built up; you simply walk down to the slow-flowing river, spread your towel on one of the huge rocks, and then you can walk straight into the water \u2013 assuming you can handle late-October temperatures. On the right bank of the river there is a tiny cave, the kind our prehistoric grandmothers and grandfathers lived in; I think they really did find traces here of prehistoric humans. On the edge of the bridge you can take great selfies if you lean a little between the arches. And while you\u2019re up there, you can shoot some spectacular panoramic photos of the forests to the north, framed by the stones of the viaduct.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the left bank of the river, on the hill above the visitor centre, there are excellent hiking trails where, alongside a boringly large number of Roman wall remains, you also get a clear view of the local plant life: vineyards, olive farms, former charcoal burners\u2019 pits, a variety of trees, meadow and woodland flowers. You can do half-hour loops or spend half a day up there. (It\u2019s a good idea to track your steps with a Google Maps + GPS combo, because the trail markings are not very clear.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I myself arrived by bike; to close the day I simply rolled down the cycle path that starts on the left bank of the river \u2013 I hardly had to pedal. The landscape is beautiful; it really feels as if you were walking around in a romantic postcard, and at every little square with a fountain you half expect to see Russell Crowe and Marion Cotillard having dinner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">How would I sell this programme to a tourist who\u2019s come from far away and is rushing onward?<br>With the exact opposite of rushing. These days you can market any destination if you add, in strikethrough and bold, that it\u2019s a touristy place\u2026 Well, here there are plenty of tourists even at the end of October, but there is also plenty of space, so you can comfortably weave around each other. Everyone who loves long walks and paddling should come here \u2013 everyone who prefers places that urbanisation has somehow bypassed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Why would I come back?<br>If I have more time, I\u2019ll sign up for a kayak trip. Next time I\u2019ll come in summer; I\u2019m curious what it feels like to sit in the middle of a river while several-thousand-year-old memories are watching over you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">N\u00eemes\u2013Pont-du-Gard TGV station, 24\/10\/2025<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pont du Gard<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Un aqueduc romain qui enjambe une vall\u00e9e oubli\u00e9e, entour\u00e9 de pins, d\u2019oliviers et d\u2019une rivi\u00e8re o\u00f9 l\u2019on peut encore tremper les pieds fin octobre. Le Pont du Gard est plus qu\u2019un site UNESCO de carte postale : c\u2019est une journ\u00e9e lente faite de balades, de rochers, de baignades et d\u2019un peu de voyage dans le temps. Si tu aimes les grandes histoires grav\u00e9es dans la pierre et l\u2019eau qui coule doucement, cet endroit va vite te rester au c\u0153ur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">O\u00f9 est-ce ?<br>\u00c0 l\u2019extr\u00eame sud de la France, \u00e0 peu pr\u00e8s au milieu du littoral, \u00e0 une cinquantaine de kilom\u00e8tres de la mer et \u00e0 une vingtaine de kilom\u00e8tres des villes de N\u00eemes et d\u2019Avignon. Le site se trouve dans une vall\u00e9e entre des collines calcaires que l\u2019industrialisation semble avoir oubli\u00e9es. Au-dessus de la vall\u00e9e passe un viaduc \u00e0 deux \u00e9tages qui enjambe le Gardon, construit par les Romains pour alimenter le r\u00e9seau d\u2019eau.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Qu\u2019est-ce qu\u2019on va voir ?<br>Des for\u00eats de pins et d\u2019oliviers, une zone de randonn\u00e9e et de loisirs, des rochers, et un pont sur lequel l\u2019\u00e9rosion semble avoir oubli\u00e9 de faire son travail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Comment ce pont est-il arriv\u00e9 l\u00e0 ?<br>Dans le sud de la France, dans n\u2019importe quel village o\u00f9 l\u2019on s\u2019arr\u00eate, on a de grandes chances de tomber sur un vestige de l\u2019\u00e9poque romaine. Du coup, en tant que quasi \u00e9trang\u00e8re, j\u2019ai un peu l\u2019impression que cette r\u00e9gion a \u00e9t\u00e9 litt\u00e9ralement sortie des marais par les Romains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Quelle est son importance aujourd\u2019hui ?<br>Oui, on peut trouver des traces de l\u2019\u00e9poque romaine un peu partout dans un rayon d\u2019une vingtaine de kilom\u00e8tres, mais rien d\u2019aussi grand \u2013 et surtout pas dans un \u00e9tat de conservation aussi impressionnant. Cela tient aussi au fait que les si\u00e8cles suivants l\u2019ont, eux aussi, utilis\u00e9. Au Moyen \u00c2ge, on a m\u00eame construit un autre pont par-dessus \u2013 ou, plus exactement, on a \u00e9largi la structure existante au niveau de la rang\u00e9e d\u2019arches inf\u00e9rieure pour qu\u2019on puisse traverser la vall\u00e9e non seulement \u00e0 pied, mais aussi en charrette. Aujourd\u2019hui, un p\u00e9rim\u00e8tre d\u2019un kilom\u00e8tre autour du pont est ferm\u00e9 \u00e0 la circulation \u2013 c\u2019est l\u00e0 que se trouvent les parkings officiels et les campings. Dans un moteur de recherche, le plus simple est de taper \u00ab mus\u00e9e Pont du Gard \u00bb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Que propose l\u2019office de tourisme ?<br>Pr\u00e9cis\u00e9ment le centre de visiteurs mentionn\u00e9 deux lignes plus haut. On voit bien qu\u2019ils visent surtout les familles : il n\u2019y a pas seulement un espace d\u2019exposition (qui explique l\u2019histoire du site), mais aussi un grand espace de d\u00e9couverte en trois dimensions, o\u00f9 l\u2019on peut jouer ; comme le dit la brochure officielle :<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Qu\u2019est-ce que moi, j\u2019ai visit\u00e9 ?<br>La plage sauvage sous le pied du pont, qui n\u2019est ni cl\u00f4tur\u00e9e ni am\u00e9nag\u00e9e ; il suffit de descendre jusqu\u2019\u00e0 la rivi\u00e8re au courant lent, d\u2019\u00e9tendre sa serviette sur l\u2019un des gros rochers, et on peut d\u00e9j\u00e0 entrer dans l\u2019eau \u2013 du moins pour ceux qui supportent les temp\u00e9ratures de fin octobre. Sur la rive droite se trouve une toute petite grotte, du genre o\u00f9 vivaient nos arri\u00e8re-grands-m\u00e8res et arri\u00e8re-grands-p\u00e8res pr\u00e9historiques ; je crois qu\u2019on a effectivement trouv\u00e9 ici des traces de la pr\u00e9sence de l\u2019homme pr\u00e9historique. Sur le bord du pont, on peut faire de super selfies si l\u2019on se penche un peu entre les arches.
