I don\u2019t really hate anyone yet \u2013 well, almost no one \u2013 but every extra minute together would just wear down my patience, so I\u2019m aiming for a quiet, clean break. And of course the evening turns out better than expected, and by the end I\u2019m almost amused by how the bosses and colleagues play games with each other and with the situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The owner also knows I don\u2019t really have anything left to do today, so she gave me a few tasks in the garden. I have to admit I actually enjoyed building the hedge; the bushes along the fence had grown huge because they\u2019d been neglected for years. Now I\u2019ve cut back the overgrown chaos so that they\u2019ve turned into a pretty decent hedge wall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I spoke with the elderly Be couple and told them that because of personal issues I won\u2019t be coming back. They said they\u2019d be happy to have me again. I\u2019ll miss the two old folks, and their dog, and their work, and the place itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the evening there\u2019s a company dinner. I don\u2019t understand what it\u2019s for. I don\u2019t want to go, but I can\u2019t wriggle out of it. The lady owner offers that they\u2019ll take me into town by car. No thanks, I\u2019d rather go by bike, I want to spend as little time with them as possible. I don\u2019t hate anyone yet \u2013 well, almost anyone\u2026 Another reason I don\u2019t feel like going is that if I spend more time with them, my antipathy will just keep growing; I\u2019d rather we part on peaceful terms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then the dinner goes better than I expected. I still feel vaguely nauseous if I have to sit at the same table as the head cleaner, and they seated me near her on purpose, just to separate Tiff and the pastry chef from each other. The manager didn\u2019t come to the dinner either. I last saw him on Sunday. I wonder if they fired him or if he quit on his own. You could see over the last few weeks that he was preparing to leave; he\u2019d already handed everything over to the head receptionist, he wasn\u2019t tense about anything anymore. I\u2019d be happy if I could work with him somewhere else; he\u2019s a good manager in the wrong place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So this little evening \u201cshowing my face\u201d didn\u2019t hurt as much as I\u2019d feared. Today everyone let go of the surface-level politeness a bit; they had good conversations, I listened pleasantly and answered now and then. The owner really got drawn into the vibe, because instead of wrapping up the entire evening in two hours, thanks to the good mood we only finished after half past eleven \u2013 even though Mrs Ca would have left before dessert, but the pastry chef (I\u2019m pretty sure on purpose) dragged things out and ordered another drink.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At this point I actually find these little power games funny.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Arles, Tuesday, 04\/11\/2025<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Le Dernier D\u00eener<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Les tout derniers jours de travail parlent moins de vraies t\u00e2ches que de haies \u00e0 tailler, de conversations d\u2019adieu et de d\u00eeners d\u2019entreprise plus ou moins forc\u00e9s. Je ne d\u00e9teste encore personne \u2013 enfin, presque personne \u2013, mais chaque minute de plus pass\u00e9e ensemble ne ferait que user un peu plus ma patience, alors je vise plut\u00f4t une s\u00e9paration calme. Et bien s\u00fbr, la soir\u00e9e se passe mieux que pr\u00e9vu, et \u00e0 la fin, ces petits jeux entre patrons et coll\u00e8gues commencent presque \u00e0 me faire sourire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">La propri\u00e9taire sait tr\u00e8s bien que je n\u2019ai plus grand-chose \u00e0 faire aujourd\u2019hui, alors elle m\u2019a donn\u00e9 quelques t\u00e2ches dans le jardin. Je l\u2019avoue, j\u2019ai pris plaisir \u00e0 tailler la haie ; les buissons le long de la cl\u00f4ture \u00e9taient devenus \u00e9normes parce qu\u2019on les avait n\u00e9glig\u00e9s pendant des ann\u00e9es. L\u00e0, j\u2019ai ratibois\u00e9 tout ce fouillis emm\u00eal\u00e9, et c\u2019est devenu un mur de haie plut\u00f4t pr\u00e9sentable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">J\u2019ai parl\u00e9 avec le vieux couple Be, je leur ai expliqu\u00e9 que, pour des raisons personnelles, je ne reviendrai plus. Ils m\u2019ont dit qu\u2019ils m\u2019attendraient quand m\u00eame. Les deux vieux vont me manquer, leur chien aussi, ainsi que leur travail, et l\u2019endroit tout entier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Le soir, d\u00eener d\u2019entreprise. Je ne comprends pas bien \u00e0 quoi \u00e7a rime. Je n\u2019ai pas envie d\u2019y aller, mais je ne peux pas vraiment y couper. La patronne me propose de m\u2019emmener en ville en voiture. Non merci, je pr\u00e9f\u00e8re y aller \u00e0 v\u00e9lo, je veux passer le moins de temps possible avec eux. Je ne d\u00e9teste encore personne \u2013 ou presque\u2026 Et puis je n\u2019ai pas envie non plus parce que, si je passe plus de temps avec eux, c\u2019est seulement mon antipathie qui va grandir ; je pr\u00e9f\u00e8re qu\u2019on se quitte en bons termes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Finalement, le d\u00eener se passe mieux que je ne l\u2019avais imagin\u00e9. J\u2019ai toujours un haut-le-c\u0153ur \u00e0 l\u2019id\u00e9e de devoir m\u2019asseoir \u00e0 la m\u00eame table que la chef des femmes de m\u00e9nage, et on m\u2019a plac\u00e9e pr\u00e8s d\u2019elle uniquement pour s\u00e9parer Tiff et le p\u00e2tissier. Le directeur, lui, n\u2019est m\u00eame pas venu au d\u00eener. Je l\u2019ai vu pour la derni\u00e8re fois dimanche. Est-ce qu\u2019on l\u2019a vir\u00e9, ou est-ce qu\u2019il est parti de lui-m\u00eame ? On voyait bien, ces derni\u00e8res semaines, qu\u2019il se pr\u00e9parait \u00e0 partir ; il avait d\u00e9j\u00e0 tout confi\u00e9 \u00e0 la responsable de la r\u00e9ception, il n\u2019\u00e9tait plus tendu pour rien. Moi, je serais ravie de retravailler avec lui ailleurs ; c\u2019est un bon manager, mais au mauvais endroit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Du coup, cette petite \u00ab visite de courtoisie \u00bb du soir ne m\u2019a pas fait aussi mal que je le craignais. Aujourd\u2019hui, tout le monde a un peu l\u00e2ch\u00e9 le vernis de surface ; ils ont bien discut\u00e9, moi j\u2019ai \u00e9cout\u00e9 tranquillement et j\u2019ai r\u00e9pondu de temps en temps.
