My backpack is too big, the question marks are even bigger, but for the first time \u201cnot having a home\u201d doesn\u2019t feel like a tragedy, it feels like room to move: I really could go anywhere now, even Egypt for a few months. Plan B is already sketched out; what I need is a working Plan A built from what I actually know how to do \u2013 words, books and a blog.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My bag is too big. I simply can\u2019t travel for months with less stuff than this. The extra cable takes up space, the keyboard takes up space, and I\u2019ve already taken the jumper out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tomorrow morning I\u2019ll go back to my little storage unit, and I\u2019ll leave my hyper-super, indestructible backpack there as well; it weighs two kilos and is very stiff, there is absolutely no way I could stuff it under an aeroplane seat, not even when it\u2019s empty. What I need is a ridiculously simple potato-sack-style bag. I\u2019ll buy one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Until then I\u2019ll take my worn-out school backpack destined for the giveaway pile and a simple shopping bag. Such madness! If I heard this from someone else, I\u2019d think they\u2019d completely lost it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I\u2019m setting off. From where, exactly? To where, exactly?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This afternoon, at ten past five, I greeted the fact with a big grin that I had finally left the Benvengudo hotel behind me. I\u2019m sorry to leave Les Baux-de-Provence and its wider surroundings; I will miss these hills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My Plan B is built on that thought: the next season starts in March; I\u2019ll apply for every single job in these little villages and towns. Except for any job at Benvengudo; three seasons there were plenty, too many, in fact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From today, my strongest goal is to create a functioning Plan A. If I want to polish my self-confidence a bit, I can boldly say that so far I\u2019ve written one book, translated three others, written more than sixteen hundred blog posts, and acted as editor-in-chief for two magazines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first big question is: how do you turn all that into a regular, meaningful income? If I can find an answer to that, I\u2019ll have my Plan A.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let\u2019s be more precise about that list. The one and only book is titled Cycling Along the Rh\u00f4ne. Only one copy exists, but it exists \u2013 a real book.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Iceland I bought a diary-style book. The nice twist is that every day it gives you a travel-related question. One page per date, and each page is divided into three sections, so the book can be used for up to three years. I translated the questions from English into Hungarian, and this year I\u2019m answering them for the fifth time. It\u2019s fascinating to watch how my answers change from year to year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The second book was a comic by Philippe Geluck; the master became famous for his cat cartoons, with captions that reflect, in a humorous way, on today\u2019s society. I admit, I left the last few pages to artificial intelligence, because by then I had so much homework from my French classes that I had no spare time left. It was great practice though, because he loves to play with the secondary meanings of words.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The third book is called Haikus from the Seashore. While I was on the beach, I amused myself by doing full, proper translations; honestly, the process completely switched my brain off in the best way. That was when the thought finally took shape in me \u2013 not just as a distant daydream this time \u2013 that if I\u2019m enjoying it this much, and the result isn\u2019t even that bad, then this is what I should be doing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In secondary school I was first the scribe and then the editor-in-chief of the school paper; my name sits proudly on the first line of two issues, after which my \u201ccareer\u201d continued in another school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Looking at proportions, my blog has also grown nicely: from an average of one reader a day two years ago I\u2019m now at an average of ten a day (the stats swing between five and thirty). I\u2019m very happy about that, and it definitely encourages me, but I still mostly do it because I enjoy the act of writing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So today at five in the afternoon another era came to an end. And at nine in the evening, when I closed the door of my little storage unit, yet another move ended \u2013 the umpteenth, roughly the twentieth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Right now, literally, I don\u2019t have a home, I don\u2019t have a flat; and I\u2019m noticing that when I think about this fact, I get wildly excited. Because now I can do anything, I can even move to Egypt for a few months if I feel like it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the next four months, my entire life will fit into a single bag.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Avignon, Wednesday night, 05\/11\/2025<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Apr\u00e8s le dernier jour de travail<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Un h\u00f4tel, trois saisons et \u00e0 peu pr\u00e8s mon vingti\u00e8me d\u00e9m\u00e9nagement \u2013 et voil\u00e0 que mes quatre prochains mois tiennent dans un seul sac. Mon sac est trop grand, les points d\u2019interrogation encore plus, mais pour la premi\u00e8re fois, \u00ab ne pas avoir de chez-moi \u00bb ne ressemble pas \u00e0 un drame ; \u00e7a ressemble \u00e0 une marge de man\u0153uvre. Je peux aller o\u00f9 je veux, m\u00eame en \u00c9gypte pour quelques mois si \u00e7a me chante. Le plan B est d\u00e9j\u00e0 esquiss\u00e9 ; il me faut maintenant un vrai plan A, construit avec ce que je sais vraiment faire : des mots, des livres, un blog.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mon sac est trop grand. Je ne peux tout simplement pas voyager pendant des mois avec moins d\u2019affaires que \u00e7a. Un c\u00e2ble de plus prend de la place, le clavier prend de la place, et j\u2019ai d\u00e9j\u00e0 retir\u00e9 le pull.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Demain matin, je retournerai \u00e0 mon petit box de stockage, et je laisserai aussi mon sac \u00e0 dos hyper-super indestructible ; il p\u00e8se deux kilos et il est tr\u00e8s rigide, je ne pourrai jamais le glisser sous un si\u00e8ge d\u2019avion, m\u00eame vide. Il me faudrait un sac d\u2019une simplicit\u00e9 ridicule, genre sac de pommes de terre. Je vais en acheter un.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">D\u2019ici l\u00e0, je pars avec mon vieux sac d\u2019\u00e9coli\u00e8re destin\u00e9 au tri et un simple sac de courses. Quelle folie ! Si j\u2019entendais \u00e7a de quelqu\u2019un d\u2019autre, je me dirais qu\u2019il ou elle a compl\u00e8tement perdu la t\u00eate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Je pars. Mais\u2026 d\u2019o\u00f9, au juste ? Et vers o\u00f9 ?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cet apr\u00e8s-midi, \u00e0 cinq heures dix, j\u2019ai accueilli avec un grand sourire le fait que j\u2019avais enfin laiss\u00e9 derri\u00e8re moi l\u2019h\u00f4tel Benvengudo. Ce que je regretterai, c\u2019est Les Baux-de-Provence et toute la r\u00e9gion alentour ; ces collines vont me manquer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">C\u2019est sur cette id\u00e9e que repose mon plan B : la prochaine saison commence en mars ; je r\u00e9pondrai \u00e0 toutes les offres d\u2019emploi de ces petits villages et de ces villes. Sauf \u00e0 celles du Benvengudo : trois saisons l\u00e0-bas, c\u2019\u00e9tait suffisant \u2013 voire trop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00c0 partir d\u2019aujourd\u2019hui, mon objectif principal, c\u2019est de fabriquer un plan A qui fonctionne. Si je veux flatter un peu mon ego, je peux dire sans rougir que, jusqu\u2019ici, j\u2019ai \u00e9crit un livre, j\u2019en ai traduit trois autres, j\u2019ai r\u00e9dig\u00e9 plus de mille six cents articles de blog, et j\u2019ai \u00e9t\u00e9 r\u00e9dactrice en chef de deux journaux.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">La premi\u00e8re grande question, c\u2019est : comment transformer tout \u00e7a en un revenu r\u00e9gulier et suffisant pour avoir un sens ? Si je trouve une r\u00e9ponse \u00e0 cette question, j\u2019aurai mon plan A.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pr\u00e9cisons la liste. Le seul et unique livre s\u2019intitule \u00c0 v\u00e9lo le long du Rh\u00f4ne. Il n\u2019en existe qu\u2019un seul exemplaire, mais il existe \u2013 un vrai livre !<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">En Islande, j\u2019ai achet\u00e9 un carnet de type agenda.
