The enchanting old town of Manosque offers stunning panoramic views and a rich history in the heart of the Provance region. Manosque, 2024. Friday afternoon, 28 June. I hope I don’t miss anything important to see on this one afternoon visit. The internet says the old town is charming and the view from the hill above is superb. The town is said to have a mining past and still has active industrial facilities. Its history dates back to Roman times – as does that of the entire Provance region. The old town is really charming. The tourist office gave me a really good map for an hour and a half walk. Where are we? In the middle of Provance. Avignon and Marseille are about a hundred kilometres away; within fifty kilometres, for example, are the stunning nature reserves of the Luberon and Verdun. Oh, and the surrounding villages (especially Valensole) are famous for their lavender fields. What to look at? The city and the tourist office website will certainly recommend a lot of activities in the area, and museums. I only arrived in the city between two transfers, just looking for the tourist office in the town hall square. (This is a reliable source of information for me in any city.) I wandered the winding streets of the old town, with their level differences, and I didn’t regret it at all. It’s a very cute city, well worth an afternoon. Like most villages in Provence: cobbled, stretched and coloured wooden shutters; from the Middle Ages onwards, every architectural age is present in a small way. It’s one of those cosy little towns where – perhaps – you can make any woman fall in love. Prices? I didn’t have time to observe it, but it’s certainly not a friendly place for stingy people. A pint of beer is eight euros. Half a litre of water is one and a half euros. I can think of a place within a hundred kilometres where you can get a golden glass for that price. Then, maybe, if I had more time to look around, I could find cheap food, drink and accommodation outside the old town, but still in the city centre. From the many posters I gather there are many festivals in town, and this afternoon a student choir was rehearsing in the town hall square. So, I’d come for more days next time, and I’d do a search for festivals in the area first. I am looking for a scooter or car rental option. For example, it could be Luberon on the first day, Verdun on the second, Valensole on the third and Manesque in the evening. It is also a beautiful region. I don’t have anyone to romance at the moment, but I’m still impressed by the variety of natural beauty.<\/p>\n\n
