By eight o&#8217;clock, I&#8217;m locking my scooter in the parking lot in front of the police station. As usual, I can only hope for luck; I hope there will still be a Friday night. The train was an hour late getting to Montpellier. I don&#8217;t know what happened because I slept through the journey, and now I&#8217;m already heading to the sea on the next tram. Which beach should I choose today? The Palavas bus is arriving first. I&#8217;ve been to this village once before; more precisely, I rode through it on my scooter while heading towards the Carnot beaches. It seems to be a small seaside village. I suspect that a hundred years ago, it was also a small fishing village because, apart from a few narrow downtown streets, every building is younger than fifty years. This part looks like it has a coastal strip with lagoons and sandy beaches. It&#8217;s a strip of land that is at most five hundred meters wide, parallel to the mainland, followed by an inner lake, and then a smaller marshland world with canals and embankments. After that, there are the suburban areas of Montpellier. So, Palavas is the holiday zone of the lagoon. One interesting feature of the village is that a canal divides the coastal strip in the middle, and both sides of the canal are bustling with life. I walk over to the right side of the city. A friendly kebab vendor easily convinces me: ten euros for a gyro plate. At the end of the land tongue, there is a twelfth-century church &#8211; this will be my destination. Meanwhile, I map out the beaches and figure out where I will sleep. After about thirty minutes of walking, I leave behind the line of apartments and hotels, and then, after bypassing a larger campsite, I decide that I&#8217;m tired, so I&#8217;ll postpone the visit to the church and just land and sleep on the next beach. The next beach is a two-kilometer-long semi-naturist beach, which means it&#8217;s not fenced off, but wearing swimwear is not mandatory. (What we know as a nudist beach in Hungary is also called a nudist beach here &#8211; with its enclosure and mandatory nudity. On this beach, everyone dresses and undresses as they please.) There are several groups where half of the people sunbathe in swimwear and the other half naked. I think this beach is in every sense a free beach. I swim a bit and then take a nap. A short nap turns into two hours of sleep. Now I&#8217;ve used sunscreen and covered my head with fabric. I plan to come back here at night. In the inner part of the lagoon strip, there is an asphalt road, then a bushy strip, a not very high fence (which I think catches the sand in case of wind:), and then the sandy stretch of the shore; relatively quickly deepening water &#8211; which I enjoy. The plan is to tie the hammock between the bushes and the fence. Before that, in the evening, I&#8217;ll go back to the village, as the leaflets indicate there will be a rock concert, and there will be a horse show in the local arena, and I&#8217;ll buy some food and water. After some wandering, I head to the beach. I really enjoy walking barefoot in the water up to my ankles. I buy a bottle of wine and some snacks for the night &#8211; I plan to consume them during my four-kilometer walk at night. I stop by the canal that divides the village. At first, I wanted to write that these narrow downtown streets are typically romantic, but no; Although beautiful, postcard-worthy houses, they are packed with onlookers, shops, and terraces. The rock musicians are tuning in the beach pavilion; they must be around sixty years old; this alone doesn&#8217;t rule out a party, but it seems they are trying out less danceable songs. After half an hour of wandering, they settle on the terrace of a pizzeria. It turned out to be a good decision. Good value for money, I ate well. On the side facing the inner lake, there is the Luna Park, which I now know means an amusement park (as well), and here is the bullfighting arena. This building cannot be more than thirty years old. It has an elliptical floor plan, an open roof, but the walls are not of the same height, following a wave line between the grandstand and the walls&#8217; tops. A horse show for an hour and a half. Not a world-class performance, but still a good show. They presented simpler equestrian skills with perhaps eight riders. As the main attraction, they rode a furious bull. By eleven in the evening, I was already a bit tired, and I didn&#8217;t feel like looking for dance places. I went down to the shore of the canal; I listened to the end of the rock concert for another half hour.
