The little details of local life \u2013 from the smell of gasoline on the beaches to shared moments with locals on overcrowded minibuses \u2013 all turn into unique experiences. Meanwhile, I\u2019m preparing for Cairo, anticipating a hectic but unforgettable day exploring its historic sights.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-flickr wp-block-embed-flickr\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<a data-flickr-embed='true' href='https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/lvarga\/albums\/72177720323388257\/' title='Egypt by Laszlo8360, on Flickr'><img src='https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54262458741_ec18a7381e_c.jpg' width='800' height='600' alt='20250111_160800'><\/a><script async src='https:\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js' charset='utf-8'><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>09:57 AM<br><\/strong> In Hurghada, there are the resorts, and then there\u2019s the other reality outside their walls where people actually live \u2013 two vastly different worlds. Inside the walls, everything is guarded, quiet, and calm. Outside, it\u2019s noisy and chaotic: trash piles in the streets where children play. Some of these kids can beg for money before they can even talk \u2013 I saw a toddler, barely walking, already holding out their hand.<br><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/lvarga\/54254163147\/in\/datetaken-public\">Photo<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>10:15 AM<\/strong><strong><br><\/strong> At the same place, for the same coffee, I\u2019ve paid different prices. The first time it was 45 pounds. Today it was 60 pounds. The coffee was listed as 45 on the menu, the server charged me 58, and then gave me two 20-pound notes as change from a 100.<br><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/lvarga\/54255321663\/in\/datetaken-public\">Photo<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>11:29 AM<\/strong><strong><br><\/strong> Oh, and sometimes I see women here who are fully veiled, with only their eyes visible. But just now, I saw a woman driving a car who was also completely veiled \u2013 only her eyes visible \u2013 except she was dressed in white, not black. I know it\u2019s not polite to say, but she looked like a ghost driving a car at a costume party.<br><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/lvarga\/54255328939\/in\/datetaken-public\">Photo<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>11:44 AM<\/strong><strong><br><\/strong> A faint smell of gasoline mixes with the worn-out sun loungers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today, I\u2019m at a beach called Family Beach, about a 40-minute walk south of yesterday\u2019s spot.<br><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/lvarga\/54255287268\/in\/datetaken-public\">Photo<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The view here is much nicer. It\u2019s so beautiful that there are many yachts anchored near the beach, one of which is the source of the gasoline smell. It\u2019s quite windy today, so swimming doesn\u2019t seem like the best idea, but sunbathing, reading, and simply doing nothing but enjoying life \u2013 this place is more than perfect for that.<br><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/lvarga\/54255486175\/in\/datetaken-public\">Photo<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>2:59 PM<\/strong><strong><br><\/strong> I\u2019ve seen kids around 10 years old working before \u2013 maybe they\u2019re just helping their families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Also, I\u2019ve noticed that the police force here mostly consists of 18-to-20-year-old guys. Every few kilometers, there\u2019s a police car with armed young men in military-style uniforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What happened to the older generation? Did they vanish?<br><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/lvarga\/54255489115\/in\/datetaken-public\">Photo<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>3:10 PM<\/strong><strong><br><\/strong> I\u2019m now using the local public transportation. I hop into a beat-up minivan like I\u2019ve been doing it all my life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I wouldn\u2019t say I feel entirely safe, but the nine locals around me seem unconcerned, so I guess I shouldn\u2019t worry either.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Still, I feel as out of place as a cockatoo in a church service.<br><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/lvarga\/54255302484\/in\/datetaken-public\">Photo<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>3:57 PM<\/strong><strong><br><\/strong> I\u2019m used to Aldi cashiers back home, not these sweet, meticulous clerks who examine each item one by one. You can tell by their movements that they\u2019re still getting used to the job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By the way, if chocolate-covered dates were available back home, I\u2019d definitely be addicted.<br><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/lvarga\/54255302989\/in\/datetaken-public\">Photo<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>9:47 PM<\/strong><strong><br><\/strong> I\u2019m starting to really enjoy Arabic music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It feels like their synth-pop era skipped them entirely. They still use authentic instruments today, though much of their musical style has been adopted from the West.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They have pop, rock, rap, and hip-hop \u2013 all the usual genres \u2013 but with a different choice of instruments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>10:19 PM<\/strong><strong><br><\/strong> In Europe, a romantic music video would typically end with a kiss. Here, it doesn\u2019t, and I found it even more expressive: instead of looking into each other\u2019s eyes and kissing against a sunset backdrop, they just leaned close and gazed at the romantic scenery together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>10:04 PM<\/strong><strong><br><\/strong> Maybe it\u2019s not so bad that I booked a tour to Cairo instead of Luxor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I\u2019ve realized that one day wouldn\u2019t be enough for me to explore all the sights in Luxor. I like to take my time in museums and read everything in detail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Luxor would feel rushed, and Cairo definitely will too, given the greater distance.
