Relaxing on the idyllic Orange Bay shoreline felt like stepping into a fairytale\u2014the hues of the sea, the sand, and the carefully designed surroundings exuded perfect harmony. For the afternoon dive, I\u2019ll skip the snorkel\u2014raising my head for a breath every minute is less trouble than emptying the water out of the snorkel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The flippers help me swim slightly faster, but we\u2019re not allowed to venture far, so they\u2019re unnecessary. Our guide doesn\u2019t let us swim over the corals since this is a protected area. During the summer, restaurants operate on the upper levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Behind the beach, a 20-meter sand dune rises, marking the edge of the national park. They adjust beanbags, help elderly guests out of the water, and seem to notice everything. The sand beneath the water is white, the water is calm and light blue, and the sand dune behind us has a slight orange hue. The problem is, most of us came to Hurghada precisely because we didn\u2019t want to pay French Riviera prices!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Charge a premium, sure, but not this much. When the service level here is comparable to France\u2019s coastline, you\u2019d expect prices to be about double what they are elsewhere in Egypt, not equal to French rates. Instead, I focus on enjoying the scenery, the sunshine, and the views of the coastal resorts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>15:30<\/strong><strong><br><\/strong> Despite my protests, the same driver who picked me up this morning insists on dropping me back where he found me. To my surprise, he boldly asks for another 100.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I\u2019m not a fan of confrontation, but I engage in a brief back-and-forth. \u201cIs this coffee made of gold?!\u201d I mutter. I don\u2019t like to escalate situations because I don\u2019t know where the line is before things might turn physical.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the end, this four-euro coffee is steep\u2014even by Provence standards.
