Between the white sand, coral reefs, exquisite lunch, and pure comfort, this was a day to remember.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>07:00<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s interesting\u2014I\u2019ve been sleeping through the nights for the past month. And for the past month, I haven\u2019t been sleeping in my usual bed in France.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>07:24<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I don\u2019t feel like getting up, let alone heading out. But okay, I\u2019ll use the beach as my motivation.<br><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/lvarga\/54261560857\/in\/datetaken-public\/\">Photo<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>08:08<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I should make this a habit\u2014leftover mango, raisins, and pomegranate in a breakfast bowl.<br><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/lvarga\/54262071875\/in\/datetaken-public\/\">Photo<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>08:37<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s striking how often discussions focus on men being violent. I\u2019ve seen this music video before\u2014the husband is abusive, and the wife struggles before getting into a car with her child. The clip ends with her turning off the engine before even driving away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>10:12<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I take a local minibus to Sheraton Road at the southern end of the city\u2014apparently, this is where the nicer beaches are.<br><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/lvarga\/54262867385\/in\/datetaken-public\/\">Photo<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>10:15<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I\u2019ve discovered the true meaning of honking: it means \u201cGet out of my way.\u201d At least for today\u2019s driver, this seems to be the only traffic rule that exists\u2014an extremely effective one, from his perspective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>10:20<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s probably not surprising, but I rarely see traffic signs. There\u2019s no such thing as a traffic cop here\u2014though I do see heavily armed officers standing guard in the streets.<br><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/lvarga\/54262872285\/in\/datetaken-public\/\">Photo<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>10:22<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So, our vehicle is a beat-up but souped-up Toyota van, something reminiscent of an old socialist Barkas. From what I know, these models are practically indestructible.<br><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/lvarga\/54262448326\/in\/datetaken-public\/\">Photo<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>10:24<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pricing still isn\u2019t clear to me\u2014I hand over 20 pounds, and the driver takes it without question. I\u2019m certain he charges me several times what locals pay, but at less than half a euro per ride, we both win. As long as the overcharging doesn\u2019t become outright extortion, I don\u2019t mind. The gap between his quality of life and mine is starkly evident.<br><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/lvarga\/54262869080\/in\/datetaken-public\/\">Photo<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>10:26<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While I love adventure, improvisation, and spontaneity, I\u2019m realizing\u2014once again on my last day\u2014that sometimes it pays to research in advance. It wouldn\u2019t have hurt to look up \u201cbest beaches\u201d or \u201cmust-see sights\u201d on my first day here. But of course, that would have made things too easy.<br><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/lvarga\/54262870005\/in\/datetaken-public\/\">Photo<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>10:39<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During casual conversations while taking panoramic shots, I have to be mindful of what I say about politics. Criticizing my home country\u2019s government for being overly friendly with Russian politics feels out of place here\u2014because, well, there are a lot of Russians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That said, I have nothing against being surrounded by Russian people. The issue isn\u2019t with ordinary citizens, and here, I\u2019m just among travelers, not politicians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But enough about politics\u2014let\u2019s focus on this incredible landscape. Maybe this is what an equatorial paradise looks like: white sands bordering an unreal blue sea. The thin light-blue stripe on the horizon is pure genius. Yesterday, a fellow traveler commented, \u201cThis place looks like Bora Bora.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>10:50<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mahmya Beach is not a public beach\u2014it\u2019s a private resort. Entrance costs 570 pounds (about 10 euros), whereas public beaches charge around 50 pounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here, I receive a bottle of water, a towel, and personalized service. A staff member thoughtfully adjusts my lounge chair to my preferred position and even brings a small table for my book.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Needless to say, it\u2019s clean, the music is soft, and a wall of bushes shields the beach from street noise, leaving only a view of the mountains beyond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s not a big beach. To the right, there\u2019s a pier where their private boat departs for another beach on Giftun Island.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The terrace restaurant serves drinks directly to my spot. Between the pier and the beach, a small coral reef lies beneath the water\u2014if I had a diving mask, I could watch the marine life more closely.<br><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/lvarga\/54261562352\/in\/datetaken-public\/\">Photo<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>12:50<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some scattered thoughts while reading:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The world doesn\u2019t change; it just repeats itself.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Something only has value when it\u2019s used.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Some people hate being treated like fools. But if you talk to certain people as if they were children, they\u2019ll actually understand you better.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Personally, I don\u2019t mind when people simplify things for me\u2014as long as they do it respectfully.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the moment, I\u2019m sitting in the middle of a desert, where the sea merges into the sand.<br><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/lvarga\/54262448886\/in\/datetaken-public\/\">Photo<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>13:28<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI found the desert to be the first place that felt like home,\u201d wrote M\u00e1rton Simon in <em>Valami mentse meg az \u00e9letem<\/em> (<em>Something Save My Life<\/em>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I grin as I read these words to the rhythm of the smooth \u201clounge jazz\u201d playing in the background.<br><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/lvarga\/54262689139\/in\/datetaken-public\/\">Photo<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>14:00<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If I\u2019m going to splurge, I might as well do it properly! At another, German. The waiter speaks English.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I understand them all. \ud83d\ude42<br><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/lvarga\/54261563272\/in\/datetaken-public\/\">Photo<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>15:30<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All in all, I pay 32 euros at the exit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For a place of this quality, I would have paid 40 euros just for the main dish in Montpellier. There, beaches are free\u2014no fences, no entry fees\u2014but if you want a sun lounger, that\u2019s another 10 euros. Then there\u2019s the drinks, the towel, the water, the attentive service\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/lvarga\/54262676283\/in\/datetaken-public\/\">Photo<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>16:08<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The city-facing side of the Marriott Hotel is a perfect example of security-conscious design. It looks like a fortress from this angle, but I bet\u2014no, I <em>remember<\/em>\u2014that from the beach side, there are no fortifications, only luxury.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once again, one wall separates two entirely different worlds.<br><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/lvarga\/54262458741\/in\/datetaken-public\/\">Photo<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>16:45<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Flagging down a taxi takes two minutes\u2014which, in this city, is considered slow. Another two minutes of negotiation, and we settle on a 300-pound fare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the airport, they\u2019ll ask for 500 pounds for the same ride\u2014this is exactly why I haggled in advance.
