In January, the beaches along Sheraton Road are practically deserted. Another two minutes of negotiation, and we settle on a 300-pound fare, while others at the airport were charged 500. Not accepted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/lvarga\/54258342166\/in\/datetaken-public\/\">Photo<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>19:02<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I\u2019d say I\u2019ll just eat and drink in France instead\u2014if they\u2019re going to charge <strong>French<\/strong> prices at the airport caf\u00e9 (<em>even more<\/em> in the souvenir shop).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But I\u2019m thirsty <em>now<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For reference: three kilometers away in town, I paid exactly <em>one-tenth<\/em> of this price for a bottle of water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/lvarga\/54254163147\/in\/datetaken-public\/\">Photo<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>19:31<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So what does an airport departure process look like here?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A police officer glances at my passport at the entrance.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Immediately inside\u2014after the restroom\u2014there\u2019s a <strong>full<\/strong> security screening: metal detectors, X-rays, shoes off, full pat-down.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Another officer checks my passport and asks where I\u2019m going. I must explain why I\u2019m traveling to France when I\u2019m not even French.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Even if I\u2019ve checked in online, <strong>everyone<\/strong> is given a freshly printed boarding pass, so <strong>everyone<\/strong> has to queue at the check-in desk.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Here, I must explain that, yes, my EU passport allows me to enter France.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They weigh the luggage.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I receive a <strong>pink<\/strong> form to manually fill out my personal information (even though it\u2019s already on my passport and boarding pass). Pens are <em>not<\/em> provided, and there\u2019s exactly <strong>one<\/strong> desk.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The border officer takes the pink form (<strong>does not read it<\/strong>), photocopies my passport (<strong>does not check it<\/strong>), and stamps my exit visa.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Another officer checks that I have the exit stamp.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Another <strong>full<\/strong> security screening: metal detectors, X-rays, shoes off, full pat-down.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The next officer <strong>does not actually check anything<\/strong>\u2014they just stamp my boarding pass to confirm I cleared security.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, when it comes to boarding, efficiency kicks in:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A staff member simply scans my barcode.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If the scan fails for more than a second, the guard behind them pulls the passenger out of line.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>230 passengers are loaded onto the plane in 230 seconds.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The flight attendant reads the boarding pass and points directly to my seat\u2014no need to search.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This process, both strange and slightly comedic to European eyes, does have a lesson: it&#8217;s <strong>far<\/strong> more efficient when <strong>everyone<\/strong> receives a standardized boarding pass.
