I may not look like a homeless person, but thanks to the Shelter Foundation, I have a roof over my head.
The caseworker is always understanding and never judges me for not having an address to write down.
During a period in my life, I used to visit a homeless centre regularly to seek financial, legal, and life skills advice. The advisors there were very helpful and warned me that without their assistance, I might soon be begging for accommodation. However, I reassured them that I was just there to seek help and had nothing but good manners. Although I was well-dressed, I often received strange looks from the other visitors. This all happened during the year I was fired from my last customer service job, which was otherwise enjoyable. The love of my life found out that I was going to run out of money and my credit would soon collapse. He started harassing me daily after that. A few months later, I had to say a painful goodbye to him as he got into the moving company’s car, which was just as painful as seeing my grandfather at the cemetery.\u00a0 A few more months passed, and I was unfortunately evicted from my downtown apartment.
However, the following year, I was able to secure a job as a waiter in a well-known restaurant thanks to my good manners. It’s been seven years since then, and now I work in a luxurious French hotel. It’s a stunning location that many people wouldn’t have thought to visit.

But let’s go back to the Budapest State Office. Despite having a busy day, the process was quick and easy.\u00a0 When it comes to administration, there are two ways to get things done: shouting and cajoling.
For example, if I brighten my colleague’s day with a piece of candy or a friendly smile, I won’t feel guilty, and the case worker may be more willing to answer my questions. This creates a more welcoming atmosphere for the next person in line. By doing this, I have contributed to making the world a better place.
Many of us imagine that we will change the world through grandiose deeds when we grow up, but sometimes, a small act of kindness, like offering a piece of candy, can make a big difference.

I spent an hour on the phone with my aunt this afternoon. I have more questions in ten minutes than I have in a year with my immediate family. I’ll put here the question I asked my family earlier about why they know so little about me. Which came first, the chicken or the egg? Which came first: them not asking me or me not telling them?
Did my aunt also ask me how it felt to see your home town for just two weeks? It’s so reassuring to see the Hungarian roughness from the outside. From a distance, many other situations seem absurd or simply idiotic. I hasten to point out that I am not talking about people. It’s a bit like watching a film in which the systems and regulatory environments themselves provide the basis for the scenes – they make puppets out of people.
I am lucky because I have the opportunity to choose another world. I also try to adapt to the new world as much as possible.

In the evening, I caught up with my former colleague, who I used to work with as a waiter. We were known for our legendary ability to work together seamlessly. It was so great to see that we’re still in sync, our conversations just seem to make time fly! \u00a0
I found out that he currently works in customer service, and I’m a bit worried about him. He’s been showing signs of burnout and fatigue, and I hope he’s taking care of himself. I tried to motivate her by injecting some enthusiasm. I hope it has a positive impact.
It’s great when women are like her. Her husband knows how lucky he is to have such a respectful and caring wife. \u00a0 During our conversation, she asked an intriguing question: ‘What is the first word that comes to mind when you hear the word home?’ I immediately responded with ‘Provence.’
He asked me if culture shock really exists. My answer is twofold. Firstly, when you are abroad and confronted with unfamiliar office processes, customer service, cashier or front office, it can be nerve-wracking because you may not understand the person’s motive. However, it is important to note that their motive is simply to do their job, and they are motivated by their salary. Welcome back home! We understand that returning home can be a difficult experience, as you may feel like a complete outsider in your own country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Je sais, je ne ressemble pas \u00e0 un sans-abri, mais sans l’aide de la Fondation Menhely, je ferais maintenant ce qu’un sans-abri typique ferait. Bien que la phrase soit un peu accrocheuse, elle contient une v\u00e9rit\u00e9. De plus, apr\u00e8s une telle introduction, l’agent d’accueil ne demande pas pourquoi je mets “sans adresse” dans la rue et le num\u00e9ro de maison. Il y a vraiment eu une p\u00e9riode de ma vie o\u00f9 je me rendais chaque semaine au centre d’accueil des sans-abri pour des conseils financiers, juridiques et de gestion de la vie. Je leur disais que si je ne recevais pas d’aide maintenant, dans quelques mois, je demanderais de l’aide pour un logement. Ils me regardaient toujours \u00e9trangement quand un homme bien habill\u00e9 apparaissait parmi les gens en difficult\u00e9, mais je leur disais que je n’avais pas d’autre choix que d’avoir de bonnes mani\u00e8res. Tout cela s’est pass\u00e9 cette ann\u00e9e-l\u00e0 o\u00f9 j’ai \u00e9t\u00e9 licenci\u00e9 de mon dernier emploi, pourtant prestigieux, au service client\u00e8le. Ensuite, l’amour de ma vie a d\u00e9couvert que je manquerais d’argent, et imm\u00e9diatement apr\u00e8s, mes cr\u00e9dits ont \u00e9chou\u00e9. \u00c0 partir de l\u00e0, elle s’est disput\u00e9e avec moi tous les jours. Quelques mois plus tard, avec douleur, je lui ai dit au revoir quand elle est mont\u00e9e dans le camion de d\u00e9m\u00e9nagement. Une douleur similaire \u00e0 celle que j’avais ressentie un peu plus t\u00f4t au cimeti\u00e8re avec mon grand-p\u00e8re. Quelques mois plus tard, j’ai \u00e9t\u00e9 expuls\u00e9 de mon appartement en location dans le centre-ville.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

L’ann\u00e9e suivante, gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 mes bonnes mani\u00e8res, j’ai trouv\u00e9 un emploi dans un restaurant r\u00e9put\u00e9 en tant que serveur. Depuis, sept ans se sont \u00e9coul\u00e9s, et maintenant, je travaille dans un h\u00f4tel de luxe fran\u00e7ais. Un endroit magnifique o\u00f9 beaucoup n’osent m\u00eame pas r\u00eaver d’aller.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maintenant, revenons un peu \u00e0 l’office d’\u00c9tat de Budapest. J’ai eu une journ\u00e9e charg\u00e9e, \u00e9videmment tout le monde est nerveux dans ces moments. Par exemple, si je remonte un peu le moral de l’agent en lui offrant une sucrerie ou un sourire amical, cela ne me rendra pas de mauvaise humeur et peut-\u00eatre que l’agent sera un peu moins r\u00e9ticent \u00e0 r\u00e9pondre \u00e0 mes questions. La proc\u00e9dure de la personne suivante commence dans une atmosph\u00e8re un peu plus conviviale. J’ai rendu le monde un peu meilleur. Nous avons tous probablement imagin\u00e9 que lorsque nous serions adultes, nous changerions le monde par des actions grandioses, alors qu’il suffit d’un bonbon pour le faire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

L’apr\u00e8s-midi, j’ai parl\u00e9 au t\u00e9l\u00e9phone avec ma tante pendant une heure. En dix minutes, elle pose plus de questions int\u00e9ress\u00e9es que mes proches en un an. Je place ici la question pr\u00e9c\u00e9dente de ma famille : pourquoi savent-ils si peu de choses sur moi ? Qu’est-ce qui est venu en premier, la poule ou l’\u0153uf ? Qu’est-ce qui est venu en premier : ils n’ont pas pos\u00e9 de questions ou je n’ai pas racont\u00e9 de moi-m\u00eame ? Elle m’a \u00e9galement demand\u00e9 comment \u00e7a fait quand tu ne vois ta ville natale que deux semaines ? C’est tr\u00e8s calme de contempler la r\u00e9alit\u00e9 hongroise de l’ext\u00e9rieur. En le regardant de loin, beaucoup de situations semblent plus absurdes ou simplement idiotes. Je tiens \u00e0 pr\u00e9ciser que je ne parle pas de personnes ici. C’est un peu comme regarder un film o\u00f9 les syst\u00e8mes et les r\u00e8gles cr\u00e9ent les sc\u00e8nes de base, faisant des gens des marionnettes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Je suis chanceux car j’ai la possibilit\u00e9 de choisir un autre monde. J’essaie de m’adapter au mieux au nouveau monde.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Le soir, j’ai retrouv\u00e9 ma super coll\u00e8gue avec qui je travaillais en tant que serveur et avec qui nous travaillons extr\u00eamement bien ensemble. Peu importe comment on le tourne, l’essentiel est que nous sommes sur la m\u00eame longueur d’onde. C’est peut-\u00eatre gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 cela que lorsque nous commen\u00e7ons \u00e0 parler, les heures s’arr\u00eatent. Elle travaille maintenant au service client\u00e8le et je m’inqui\u00e8te un peu pour elle car elle montre des signes d’\u00e9puisement et d’ennui. J’ai essay\u00e9 de lui remonter le moral, de la motiver un peu. J’esp\u00e8re que cela aura un impact. Mon Dieu, si seulement chaque femme \u00e9tait comme elle. C’est beau de voir que son mari sait aussi \u00e0 quel point il est chanceux d’avoir une telle \u00e9pouse et la traite avec respect et attention. Elle a pos\u00e9 une question int\u00e9ressante. “R\u00e9ponds sans r\u00e9fl\u00e9chir ! Quel mot te vient \u00e0 l’esprit en premier quand tu entends le mot ‘chez toi’ ?” Et j’ai r\u00e9pondu sans r\u00e9fl\u00e9chir : Provence. Elle m’a \u00e9galement demand\u00e9 si le choc culturel \u00e9tait r\u00e9el. Ma r\u00e9ponse est oui, deux fois. D’abord lorsque vous \u00eates confront\u00e9 aux processus d’un bureau \/ service client \/ caisse \/ bureau frontal \u00e0 l’\u00e9tranger et que vous \u00eates nerveux parce que vous ne comprenez pas les intentions cach\u00e9es de l’agent en face de vous.
