My answer: Tidy up around you!)<br>And this social and environmental awareness started simply because it\u2019s customary here to celebrate ourselves\u2014together; and such gatherings are, in most cases, really not about money,<br>(you just put out some chairs in the street, whoever can play brings an instrument, whoever can bake brings their pog\u00e1csa),<br>but here in Saint-R\u00e9my they really went all in.<br>They held the evening party in the old bull-running arena and left the production to pros.<br>So picture half a soccer pitch of sand surrounded by a two-meter-high stone wall (so the bull can\u2019t charge into the crowd); in the past, spectators sat on the terraces above the wall.<br>They built a stage against the far wall, with LED walls, moving-head lights, high-power smoke machines, and spark fountains.<br>This time the music wasn\u2019t provided by the guy next door but by a trained crew.<br>Many say a DJ can be replaced by a Spotify playlist; for an average DJ that\u2019s exactly true.<br>(I\u2019ll never forget that bar in Bordeaux that did two things: sold drinks ten percent cheaper than the other spots on the pedestrian street, and typed \u201clatin disco\u201d into the search bar; it closed last every night.)<br>But a DJ isn\u2019t just a music editor; to me, one of their most important jobs is to watch the crowd and respond\u2014adjust the prepped tracks if needed; and, when useful, hype the audience with a few words (no needless narration, just encouragement).<br>On top of that, tonight\u2019s trick was working in pairs\u2014and not just any pair: a retro DJ teamed up with a die-hard techno fan\u2014sensationally.<br>Oh, and another thing: they did it all while skipping the usual pop hits.<br>So that\u2019s why it pays to hire a really skilled DJ: they can read people, have musical literacy, and have trained on their gear, layering the music with effects and razor-clean edits.<br>A few notes I scribbled at the end of the party:<br>They started fighting right in front of me.<br>I could see a brawl coming on their faces, but there was nowhere to back away\u2014the crowd was that dense.<br>These folks, too, tried to copy Belgium\u2019s Tomorrowland stagecraft: lights aimed at the audience, LED animations synced to the current track, decorations.<br>They made one mistake: Tomorrowland scales its look for crowds in the hundreds of thousands, so the outward-facing lights are mounted high enough to hit above people\u2019s eyes; here we\u2019re only a few thousand\u2014you can\u2019t rig the lights ten meters up.<br>A few thousand of us! In a town of ten thousand!<br>At the exit, five standby vehicles and twenty police officers waited ready to intervene, but they never had to move; security quickly pulled the troublemakers from the crowd.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Go\u00fbte la vie !<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Saint-R\u00e9my prouve qu\u2019une f\u00eate de quartier n\u2019est pas une affaire d\u2019argent.<br>Sur le sable de l\u2019ancienne ar\u00e8ne, r\u00e9tro et techno se sont donn\u00e9 la main, la foule respirait au rythme du beat.<br>Notes d\u2019une nuit o\u00f9 un bon DJ a surpass\u00e9 n\u2019importe quelle playlist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Saint-R\u00e9my-de-Provence, 16\/08\/2025<br>\u00c9crire sur la musique, c\u2019est un peu comme danser l\u2019architecture, ou mieux encore :<br>Go\u00fbte la vie !<br>Le d\u00e9cor, cette fois, c\u2019est Saint-R\u00e9my-de-Provence, la Mecque des voyageurs au c\u0153ur romantique.<br>Je ne connais m\u00eame pas le nom exact de la s\u00e9rie de festivit\u00e9s du moment.<br>Ici \u2014 on se f\u00eate sans cesse.<br>R\u00e9sultat : l\u2019id\u00e9e des \u00ab Fran\u00e7ais arrogants \u00bb na\u00eet assez naturellement.<br>Sauf que cette arrogance s\u2019accompagne d\u2019une forme de conscience.<br>On organise des f\u00eates pour honorer soi-m\u00eame et son environnement \u2192 on devient fier de soi, de son cadre, de son voisinage \u2192 il devient normal que des inconnus engagent la conversation dans les magasins et dans la rue.<br>On gagne en conscience de soi \u2192 on respecte sa personne, son environnement, ses petites communaut\u00e9s \u2192 on en prend soin consciemment.<br>Ce qui nous am\u00e8ne \u00e0 l\u2019un des mantras de la philosophie, du d\u00e9veloppement personnel et de la protection de la plan\u00e8te :<br>Mets de l\u2019ordre chez toi !<br>(Ou, quand un coll\u00e8gue m\u2019a demand\u00e9 : Que faut-il pour que je sois meilleur\u00b7e ? Ma r\u00e9ponse : Range autour de toi !)<br>Et cette conscience sociale et environnementale est partie d\u2019une simple habitude : ici, on aime se c\u00e9l\u00e9brer ensemble ; et la plupart du temps, ces rassemblements ne sont vraiment pas une question d\u2019argent,<br>(on sort quelques chaises dans la rue, celui qui sait jouer apporte son instrument, celui qui sait cuire apporte ses pog\u00e1csa),<br>mais ici, \u00e0 Saint-R\u00e9my, ils ont fait les choses en grand.<br>La f\u00eate du soir s\u2019est tenue dans l\u2019ancienne ar\u00e8ne des courses de taureaux, confi\u00e9e \u00e0 des pros.<br>Imaginez un demi-terrain de foot sablonneux entour\u00e9 d\u2019un mur de pierre de deux m\u00e8tres (pour qu\u2019aucun taureau ne puisse foncer dans le public) ; autrefois, les spectateurs s\u2019asseyaient sur les terrasses au-dessus du mur.<br>On a mont\u00e9 une sc\u00e8ne contre le mur du fond, avec murs LED, lyres motoris\u00e9es, machines \u00e0 fum\u00e9e haute puissance et fontaines d\u2019\u00e9tincelles.<br>Cette fois, la musique n\u2019\u00e9tait pas assur\u00e9e par le voisin du coin, mais par une \u00e9quipe form\u00e9e.<br>Beaucoup disent qu\u2019un DJ peut \u00eatre remplac\u00e9 par une playlist Spotify ; pour un DJ moyen, c\u2019est tout \u00e0 fait vrai.<br>(Je n\u2019oublierai jamais ce bar bordelais qui faisait deux choses : des boissons dix pour cent moins ch\u00e8res que sur la rue pi\u00e9tonne, et il tapait \u00ab latin disco \u00bb dans la barre de recherche ; il fermait toujours le dernier.)<br>Mais un DJ n\u2019est pas qu\u2019un monteur musical ; l\u2019une de ses missions majeures, selon moi, c\u2019est d\u2019observer le public et de r\u00e9agir \u2014 ajuster les morceaux pr\u00e9par\u00e9s si besoin ; et, quand il le faut, \u00e9lectriser la foule avec quelques mots (pas de narration superflue, juste de l\u2019enthousiasme).<br>Par-dessus le march\u00e9, l\u2019astuce du soir \u00e9tait de travailler en duo \u2014 et pas n\u2019importe lequel : un DJ r\u00e9tro avec un vrai fan de techno \u2014 sensationnel.<br>Ah, et encore une chose : tout cela en \u00e9vitant les tubes pop habituels.<br>Voil\u00e0 pourquoi il vaut la peine d\u2019engager un DJ tr\u00e8s dou\u00e9 : il sait lire les gens, poss\u00e8de une culture musicale, et a beaucoup pratiqu\u00e9 sur son mat\u00e9riel, ajoutant une couche suppl\u00e9mentaire \u00e0 la musique gr\u00e2ce aux effets et aux montages impeccables.<br>Quelques notes griffonn\u00e9es \u00e0 la fin de la soir\u00e9e :<br>Ils se sont encore battus juste devant moi.<br>On le lisait sur leurs visages que \u00e7a allait d\u00e9g\u00e9n\u00e9rer, mais je ne pouvais pas reculer, la foule \u00e9tait trop dense.<br>Eux aussi tentaient de copier la sc\u00e9nographie de Tomorrowland en Belgique : projecteurs dirig\u00e9s vers le public, animations LED synchronis\u00e9es au morceau, d\u00e9cors.<br>Ils ont commis une erreur : la mise en sc\u00e8ne de Tomorrowland est dimensionn\u00e9e pour des centaines de milliers de personnes, les projecteurs tourn\u00e9s vers l\u2019ext\u00e9rieur sont donc assez hauts pour \u00e9clairer au-dessus des t\u00eates ; ici, nous ne sommes que quelques milliers \u2014 on ne peut pas accrocher les lumi\u00e8res \u00e0 dix m\u00e8tres.<br>Nous sommes quelques milliers !
