Rencontres de la Photographie #photo #festival 2025-08-30, Saturday<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One day in Arles, wandering the maze of Les Rencontres de la Photographie: wildness and urbanity, absurd and lyrical, side by side.<br>A few rooms, a few names, many questions in my head.<br>Here are my notes, fresh from Saturday, 2025-08-30.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ancien Coll\u00e8ge Mistral &gt; Laurance Kubski<br>I like this sentence: \u201cDoes the wild (animal) still exist?\u201d<br>The Swiss documentarian also made images about nature conservation.<br>I would sum up what I saw like this: wild animals are being cared for by city-dwelling humans.<br>After that, the question arises for me as well: how wild are wild animals?<br>What are the interactions?<br>Who influenced whom, and how?<br>Pictures of hunting, bird ringing, taxidermy, fishing, or simply hiking in nature and taking stock of populations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ancien Coll\u00e8ge Mistral &gt; Kourtney Roy<br>\u201cMost people prefer the anticipation and the memories to the actual experience of the vacation.\u201d<br>The images look as if they were shot on an ocean liner near Miami.<br>Yet the works show the absurdity of the situations.<br>For example, a Barbie girl smoking in a diving mask.<br>Or a ship with a dolphin tail.<br>I liked these pictures so much I\u2019d even take them home.<br>Even the keywords call to me: tourism, absurdity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maison des Peintres &gt; Brandon Gercara<br>Our man moved to R\u00e9union; it\u2019s France\u2019s African colony (or rather: one of the French Republic\u2019s overseas departments&#8230;).<br>Our photographer also filmed people who live their gender identity differently from what public morals leave unremarked.<br>Here they screen a film alongside a few deft ball photos; at the beginning, for example, a bearded man walks on the beach in a red skirt.<br>So, through the LGBTQI veil, he shows the island\u2019s nature and the changes since its occupation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maison des Peintres &gt; Claudia Andujar<br>Now over ninety, she was born into a European Jewish family, then settled in Brazil after the war.<br>Since the 1970s she has become world-famous for her series on Amazonian Indigenous peoples.<br>Here we mostly saw her pre-Amazonas works, which are likewise very good!<br>For example, nude photos of Sonia, where she superimposed several scenes, and tinted the monochrome images blue, purple, or red.<br>There was also a series about labor, birth, and lying-in, and countless brilliant portraits of everyday Brazilian people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maison des Peintres &gt; Lila Neuntre<br>This was an interesting body of work too.<br>The theme was groups living on the social periphery and their relation to the mainstream.<br>She mainly photographed transgender, LGBTQI, or Latin-minority people living in the U.S., while they dance or are simply queens of the night.<br>These are good pictures, with prompts it\u2019s truly necessary to talk through for understanding; but like this\u2014when the bearded-women theme crosses my path for the sixth time in two days\u2014it\u2019s a bit much for me today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sainte-Anne Church &gt; On Country: Photographie d\u2019Australie<br>Supposedly this exhibition is one of the festival\u2019s main attractions.<br>In every side chapel of the former church, a different photographer exhibits.<br>As I see it, the common thread in each is the search for ancestral Australia and its descendants.<br>I like that they don\u2019t present one person, but a topic shown from as many angles as possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This, by the way, is a leitmotif of the entire festival this year: in more complex venues the theme often changes from room to room, yet the festival\u2019s official website ties these together.<br>On the site, it primarily lists the shows by themes and recommends routes for them.<br>Back when I first saw this photo festival, it still organized the venues one under another.<br>It seems the city still doesn\u2019t have one big, common curator\u2014perhaps that\u2019s precisely the pleasure: every gallery selects and presents according to its own principles; the organizers added that they found common points across the different spaces and promote along those lines.<br>For example, there is the \u201cFamily Dynamics\u201d label, and to explore the motivations within these, the website (and the app) recommends eight exhibition rooms, which it strings into a sightseeing route.<br>Brilliant organization!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Arles, Les Rencontres de la Photographie #photo #festival 2025-08-30, samedi<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Une journ\u00e9e \u00e0 Arles, dans le labyrinthe des Rencontres de la Photographie : sauvagerie et urbanit\u00e9, absurde et lyrique c\u00f4te \u00e0 c\u00f4te.<br>Quelques salles, quelques noms, beaucoup de questions en t\u00eate.<br>Voici mes notes, toutes fra\u00eeches de ce samedi 2025-08-30.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ancien Coll\u00e8ge Mistral &gt; Laurance Kubski<br>Cette phrase me pla\u00eet : \u00ab Le sauvage (l\u2019animal) existe-t-il encore ? \u00bb<br>Le documentariste suisse a aussi r\u00e9alis\u00e9 des images sur la protection de la nature.<br>Je r\u00e9sumerais ce que j\u2019ai vu ainsi : des animaux sauvages sont soign\u00e9s par des citadin\u00b7e\u00b7s.<br>D\u00e8s lors, la question se pose pour moi aussi : \u00e0 quel point les animaux sauvages sont-ils sauvages ?<br>Quelles sont les interactions ?<br>Qui a agi sur l\u2019autre, et comment ?<br>Des images de chasse, de baguage d\u2019oiseaux, de taxidermie, de p\u00eache, ou simplement de promenade dans la nature et l\u2019absurdit\u00e9 des situations.<br>Par exemple, une fille Barbie qui fume avec un masque de plong\u00e9e.<br>Ou un bateau dot\u00e9 d\u2019une queue de dauphin.<br>Ces images m\u2019ont Brandon Gercara<br>Notre homme a d\u00e9m\u00e9nag\u00e9 sur l\u2019\u00eele de La R\u00e9union ; c\u2019est la colonie africaine de la France (ou plut\u00f4t : l\u2019un des d\u00e9partements d\u2019outre-mer de la R\u00e9publique fran\u00e7aise\u2026).<br>Notre photographe a aussi film\u00e9 des personnes qui vivent leur identit\u00e9 de genre autrement que ce que la morale publique laisse sans commentaire.<br>Ici, on projette un film \u00e0 c\u00f4t\u00e9 de quelques photos de bal habiles ; au d\u00e9but, par exemple, un homme barbu marche sur la plage en jupe rouge.<br>Bref, \u00e0 travers le voile LGBTQI, il montre la nature de l\u2019\u00eele et les changements survenus depuis son occupation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maison des Peintres &gt; Claudia Andujar<br>Aujourd\u2019hui nonag\u00e9naire, elle est n\u00e9e dans une famille juive europ\u00e9enne, puis s\u2019est install\u00e9e au Br\u00e9sil apr\u00e8s la guerre.<br>\u00c0 partir des ann\u00e9es 1970, elle est devenue mondialement connue pour ses s\u00e9ries sur les peuples autochtones amazoniens.<br>Ici, nous avons surtout vu ses travaux d\u2019avant-Amazonas, qui sont eux aussi tr\u00e8s r\u00e9ussis !<br>Par exemple, des nus de Sonia o\u00f9 elle a superpos\u00e9 plusieurs sc\u00e8nes, et elle a teint\u00e9 les images monochromes en bleu, violet ou rouge.<br>Il y avait aussi une s\u00e9rie sur le travail, l\u2019accouchement et les suites de couches, ainsi qu\u2019une multitude de portraits g\u00e9niaux de Br\u00e9silien\u00b7ne\u00b7s du quotidien.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dansent ou qu\u2019elles sont simplement les reines de la nuit.<br>Ce sont de bonnes images, avec des pistes dont il est vraiment n\u00e9cessaire de discuter pour mieux comprendre ; mais ainsi, quand Sainte-Anne &gt; On Country: Photographie d\u2019Australie<br>En principe, cette exposition est l\u2019une des principales attractions du festival.<br>Dans chaque chapelle lat\u00e9rale de l\u2019ancienne \u00e9glise, un autre photographe expose.<br>J\u2019y vois un point commun : chacun cherche l\u2019Australie ancestrale et ses descendant\u00b7e\u00b7s.<br>J\u2019aime qu\u2019on ne pr\u00e9sente pas une seule personne, mais un sujet montr\u00e9 sous le plus grand nombre d\u2019angles possibles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Au demeurant, c\u2019est un leitmotiv de tout le festival cette ann\u00e9e : dans un lieu plus complexe, le th\u00e8me change souvent de salle en salle, mais le site officiel du festival relie tout cela.<br>Sur le site, on classe d\u2019abord les expositions par th\u00e8mes et l\u2019on propose des itin\u00e9raires.<br>Autrefois, quand j\u2019ai vu ce festival photo pour la premi\u00e8re fois, on alignait encore les lieux les uns sous les autres.<br>Il semble qu\u2019il n\u2019y ait toujours pas un grand commissaire commun pour la ville \u2013 c\u2019est peut-\u00eatre justement ce qui fait le plaisir : chaque galerie s\u00e9lectionne et montre selon ses propres principes ; les organisateurs y ont ajout\u00e9 qu\u2019ils ont cherch\u00e9 les points communs entre les diff\u00e9rents espaces et qu\u2019ils en font la promotion en fonction d\u2019eux.<br>Par exemple, il y a l\u2019\u00e9tiquette \u00ab Dynamiques familiales \u00bb, et pour d\u00e9couvrir les motivations qui s\u2019y nichent, le site (et
