Ugyanis szerintem ez a \u201ements\u00fck meg a bolyg\u00f3t\u201d hozz\u00e1\u00e1ll\u00e1s az ehhez hasonl\u00f3 apr\u00f3 dolgok sokas\u00e1g\u00e1n m\u00falik. I can sew on some kind of patch, but you might not like it.\u201d<br>I\u2019d answer that it\u2019s still better than throwing the trousers away.<br>Here I asked if she had any alternative idea, and she said no.<br>She probably says that because she can\u2019t predict whether, if she replaces it according to her taste, I\u2019ll complain \u2014 so it\u2019s cheaper to back out than to step into the story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It annoys me not only because of the pointless back-and-forth (of which I had a few today), but because of sustainability.<br>(This theme followed me all day.)<br>I think this \u201clet\u2019s save the planet\u201d attitude hinges on a multitude of tiny actions like this.<br>If we were truly mindful, we wouldn\u2019t hide the black and yellow bin islands behind reed mats so we don\u2019t have to see the junk we produce; we\u2019d pin a red cloth in front of them instead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Around here, for households there are two types of bins: black for general waste, and yellow for everything recyclable; then the folks at the waste depot sort it.<br>Where residents must pour trash into three or more categories \u2014 for example in \u00d3buda, where there are yellow, green, and blue bins \u2014 even there the depot worker checks afterward, because residents often make mistakes.<br>Once a week I\u2019m a \u201cbusiness\u201d customer at the depot, where I\u2019m required to sort the contents of my van into eighteen different containers; when I back up to the ramp, a worker looks into the cargo area and explains which waste goes into which container.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So next week I can head to the store, buy some not-too-ugly fabric, and mend the trousers myself.<br>It\u2019s early October now; I might go to Hungary at the end of November.<br>If it fit in my bag, I\u2019d let this story go, because in B\u00e9k\u00e1smegyer there\u2019s a lady who\u2019ll fix my forty-euro trousers for at most ten euros \u2014 I\u2019ve only worn them once \u2014 but I already know they won\u2019t fit in the bag.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Watch<br>It\u2019s a wooden watch I bought in Barcelona \u2014 to replace the \u20ac300 smartwatch that was stolen the night before.<br>So taking the strap back to the manufacturer would be a hassle.<br>One of the half-centimeter wooden cubes snapped.<br>The third watchmaker explained he could repair the strap, but then it would only fit a child-sized wrist.<br>He said to return it to the manufacturer and ask for a new strap part.<br>So should I throw the watch out as well?!<br>Sixty euros, goodbye!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Earphones<br>I have a pretty good (and expensive) pair of earphones that are, according to the specs, moderately water-resistant.<br>Since they fell into the sea \u2014 for a few seconds \u2014 they\u2019ve had a contact fault.<br>I bought a new pair in August, but I don\u2019t want to let this dried-out one go to waste either.<br>Today I took them back to the store where I bought them, and I got a copy of the receipt.<br>I asked whether they could send them to service.<br>Well, they don\u2019t deal with that \u2014 call the service by phone.<br>Thanks a lot!<br>I can barely understand what they say on the phone.<br>Next week I can go in person to the manufacturer\u2019s service center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sunglasses<br>This one I sorted surprisingly fast.<br>A screw had fallen out earlier.<br>The guy didn\u2019t make a fuss, popped in a new screw, and wished me a nice day.<br>He solved it in two minutes \u2014 free of charge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If around here we had something more than paper tigers, maintenance would be a basic, everyday topic.<br>Instead, I keep running into the \u201cThrow out the old, buy a new one\u201d attitude\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Arles, 2025-10-03. Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">La couturi\u00e8re<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">De petites r\u00e9parations, de grandes le\u00e7ons : un pantalon, une montre, des \u00e9couteurs et des lunettes de soleil qui parlent de durabilit\u00e9.<br>Au quotidien, la r\u00e9ponse la plus simple reste souvent \u00ab jette et rach\u00e8te \u00bb.<br>Moi, je pr\u00e9f\u00e9rerais r\u00e9parer \u2014 si on me laissait faire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Je n\u2019ai trouv\u00e9 qu\u2019une seule couturi\u00e8re ouverte en ville.<br>Au printemps, j\u2019ai r\u00e9ussi \u00e0 br\u00fbler, avec le chauffage, une zone de la taille d\u2019une paume sur les fesses de mon pantalon.<br>Elle dit qu\u2019elle ne peut pas le r\u00e9parer, car elle n\u2019a pas le m\u00eame tissu vert clair.<br>Ce n\u2019\u00e9tait pas ce que je demandais.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">En Europe centrale et orientale, fa\u00e7onn\u00e9e par l\u2019\u00e9conomie de p\u00e9nurie plut\u00f4t que par l\u2019abondance, un tailleur exp\u00e9riment\u00e9 dirait : \u00ab Je n\u2019ai pas ce tissu ; je peux coudre une sorte de pi\u00e8ce, mais elle pourrait ne pas vous plaire. \u00bb<br>Je r\u00e9pondrais que c\u2019est toujours mieux que de le jeter.<br>Ici aussi j\u2019ai demand\u00e9 si elle avait une alternative : elle a dit non.<br>Sans doute parce qu\u2019elle ne peut pas pr\u00e9voir si, en rempla\u00e7ant selon son go\u00fbt, je viendrais me plaindre ; il lui co\u00fbte moins cher de se retirer que d\u2019entrer dans l\u2019histoire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00c7a m\u2019agace non seulement \u00e0 cause des d\u00e9marches inutiles (dont j\u2019ai eu quelques-unes aujourd\u2019hui), mais aussi pour la durabilit\u00e9.<br>(Ce th\u00e8me a travers\u00e9 toute ma journ\u00e9e.)<br>Je pense que cette attitude \u00ab sauvons la plan\u00e8te \u00bb se joue dans la multitude de petits gestes comme celui-ci.<br>Si nous \u00e9tions vraiment conscients, nous ne cacherions pas les \u00eelots de bacs noirs et jaunes derri\u00e8re des nattes de roseau pour ne pas voir tous les d\u00e9chets que nous produisons ; nous y planterions plut\u00f4t un chiffon rouge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ici, pour les particuliers, il y a deux types de bacs : noir pour les ordures m\u00e9nag\u00e8res, et jaune pour tout ce qui est recyclable ; ensuite, les agents du centre de tri s\u2019occupent de s\u00e9parer.<br>L\u00e0 o\u00f9 les habitants doivent trier en trois cat\u00e9gories ou plus \u2014 par exemple \u00e0 \u00d3buda, o\u00f9 il y a des bacs jaunes, verts et bleus \u2014, m\u00eame l\u00e0 un employ\u00e9 repasse derri\u00e8re, parce que les gens se trompent souvent.<br>Une fois par semaine, je suis \u00ab client professionnel \u00bb au centre, o\u00f9 je dois r\u00e9partir le contenu de mon fourgon dans dix-huit conteneurs diff\u00e9rents ; quand je recule sur la rampe, un employ\u00e9 jette un \u0153il dans le coffre et m\u2019explique quel d\u00e9chet va dans quel conteneur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Donc, la semaine prochaine, j\u2019irai au magasin, j\u2019ach\u00e8terai un tissu pas trop moche, et je repriserai le pantalon moi-m\u00eame.<br>Nous sommes d\u00e9but octobre ;
