why, in a ten-person language-learning group, three were active artists and everyone knew the theater\u2019s opening hours.<br>This isn\u2019t a big city \u2014 maybe fifty thousand \u2014 yet relative to the population you really feel as if it were a cross-disciplinary arts meeting place.<br>It\u2019s not the cheapest town; within a hundred kilometers housing is easier almost anywhere else, and still I\u2019m far from the first who\u2019d rather live here than in other cities.<br>I will miss this area!<br>In a few weeks I\u2019ll leave and \u2014 since money matters \u2014 I\u2019m not sure I\u2019ll come back in spring.<br>What the mayor said surely wasn\u2019t coined by him this year; for example, the summer photo festival is already more than thirty years old.<br>And for so many artist-souled people to get used to coming here, it must have taken decades of strategy.<br>That might be the key to any town\u2019s development: forward-looking urban planning.<br>And maybe it\u2019s true for everything and everyone that defining what makes us different gives great strength \u2014 and then moving forward with that in mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">St. Anne Church<br>On the main square they set up an exhibition of local photographers\u2019 works.<br>Some shot people in random situations, some shot nature, some simply captured everyday moods.<br>Good material.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Flotados<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That was the name of the troupe who gave the festival\u2019s opening show; they botched it, then started over.<br>Interesting, but I wouldn\u2019t have paid for it.<br>It\u2019s pitch dark, and suddenly a huge piano starts floating at first-floor height; rotated, we see its lid vertically.<br>The man jumps onto it and, almost lying down, starts to play.<br>They project images of the Moon and of a princess dancing on the Moon onto the piano.<br>The man plays; we hear someone inside the piano trying to break out.<br>The Moon princess emerges from the piano, lets down a huge scarf, and, hanging from it, begins an acrobatic dance; later she dances on a huge white floating sphere symbolizing the Moon.<br>The man switches to accordion.<br>The girl lands; there\u2019s a regular piano on the ground too, she dances on that while he plays for her.<br>Then they set a huge pole into the piano, and the girl starts pole-dancing to his playing.<br>At this point I decided they\u2019d overcomplicated it.<br>With fewer show elements they\u2019d achieve more.<br>The floating idea is great, but then why not stay airborne throughout?<br>Fewer elements and less gear might also have avoided the power outage in the middle of the show.<br>The performance, which should have been forty-five minutes, stood still for fifteen.<br>They say it was a love story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Monument&rsquo; Arles<br>That\u2019s the name of the weekend\u2019s event series.<br>The word itself points to historical monuments \u2014 of which there are plenty here.<br>I assume the motivation is to showcase World Heritage sites \u2014 like this square with the bishop\u2019s palace, the former post palace, two churches, and the old town hall.<br>Every program is arranged so that historical landmarks provide the backdrop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pas \u00e9tonnant<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Un jour de cong\u00e9 qui, sans surprise, finit en visite d\u2019expo \u2014 \u00e0 Arles, rarement un week-end sans art.<br>La phrase du maire sur la \u00ab capitale culturelle \u00bb \u00e9claire tout.<br>Cette r\u00e9gion va me manquer \u2014 et je ne reviendrai peut-\u00eatre pas au printemps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Arles, vendredi 17 octobre 2025<br>Je ne m\u2019\u00e9tonne plus de me retrouver \u00e0 une exposition pendant mon jour de repos.<br>Je suis \u00e0 Arles, et le discours d\u2019ouverture du maire me saute aux yeux sur le site du festival de la semaine :<br>\u00ab \u2026 pour qu\u2019Arles devienne une capitale culturelle\u2026 \u00bb<br>Ah, d\u2019accord \u2014 tout s\u2019explique.<br>Si c\u2019est l\u2019objectif, on comprend pourquoi il y a un \u00e9v\u00e9nement artistique chaque week-end, pourquoi des tableaux contemporains pendent dans quelques caf\u00e9s ; pourquoi, dans un groupe de dix apprenants en langue, trois \u00e9taient des artistes actifs et tout le monde connaissait les horaires du th\u00e9\u00e2tre.<br>Ce n\u2019est pas une grande ville \u2014 peut-\u00eatre cinquante mille habitants \u2014 et pourtant, au regard de la population, on a vraiment l\u2019impression d\u2019un lieu de rencontre pluridisciplinaire.<br>Ce n\u2019est pas la ville la moins ch\u00e8re ; dans un rayon de cent kilom\u00e8tres, le logement est plus simple presque partout, et pourtant je suis loin d\u2019\u00eatre la premi\u00e8re personne qui pr\u00e9f\u00e9rerait vivre ici plut\u00f4t qu\u2019ailleurs.<br>Cette r\u00e9gion va me manquer !<br>Dans quelques semaines je pars et \u2014 comme l\u2019argent compte \u2014 je ne suis pas s\u00fbr de revenir au printemps.<br>La phrase du maire n\u2019a certainement pas \u00e9t\u00e9 invent\u00e9e par lui cette ann\u00e9e ; par exemple, le festival photo d\u2019\u00e9t\u00e9 a plus de trente ans.<br>Et pour qu\u2019autant de gens au temp\u00e9rament d\u2019artiste prennent l\u2019habitude de venir ici, il a fallu des d\u00e9cennies de strat\u00e9gie.<br>C\u2019est peut-\u00eatre la cl\u00e9 du d\u00e9veloppement de toute commune : un urbanisme prospectif.<br>Et c\u2019est peut-\u00eatre vrai pour tout et chacun qu\u2019une grande force na\u00eet quand on d\u00e9finit ce qui nous diff\u00e9rencie des autres \u2014 puis qu\u2019on avance en en ayant conscience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00c9glise Sainte-Anne<br>Sur la place principale, on a mont\u00e9 une exposition des travaux de photographes locaux.<br>Certains ont photographi\u00e9 des gens dans des situations al\u00e9atoires, d\u2019autres la nature, d\u2019autres encore de simples ambiances quotidiennes.<br>Beau corpus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Flotados<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">C\u2019\u00e9tait le nom de la troupe qui a donn\u00e9 le spectacle d\u2019ouverture du festival ; ils se sont plant\u00e9s, puis ont recommenc\u00e9.<br>Int\u00e9ressant, mais je n\u2019aurais pas pay\u00e9 pour \u00e7a.<br>Il fait noir d\u2019encre, et soudain un \u00e9norme piano se met \u00e0 flotter \u00e0 la hauteur du premier \u00e9tage ; pivot\u00e9, on en voit le couvercle \u00e0 la verticale.<br>L\u2019homme saute dessus et, presque couch\u00e9, se met \u00e0 jouer.<br>On projette sur le piano des images de la Lune et d\u2019une princesse dansant sur la Lune.<br>L\u2019homme joue ; on entend quelqu\u2019un dans le piano qui veut s\u2019en \u00e9chapper.<br>La princesse de la Lune sort du piano, laisse descendre une immense \u00e9charpe et, suspendue \u00e0 celle-ci, entame une danse acrobatique ; plus tard elle danse sur une grande sph\u00e8re blanche flottante qui symbolise la Lune.<br>L\u2019homme passe \u00e0 l\u2019accord\u00e9on.<br>La fille atterrit ; il y a aussi un piano traditionnel au sol, elle y danse pendant qu\u2019il joue pour elle.<br>Puis ils fixent un grand m\u00e2t dans le piano, et la fille commence un num\u00e9ro de pole dance sur sa musique.<br>\u00c0 ce stade, j\u2019ai conclu qu\u2019ils avaient trop compliqu\u00e9 la chose.<br>Avec moins d\u2019effets de show, ce serait plus efficace.<br>L\u2019id\u00e9e de l\u00e9vitation est super, mais alors pourquoi ne pas rester en l\u2019air tout du long ?<br>Moins d\u2019\u00e9l\u00e9ments et moins de mat\u00e9riel auraient peut-\u00eatre \u00e9vit\u00e9 la panne de courant au milieu du spectacle.<br>Le spectacle, pr\u00e9vu pour quarante-cinq minutes, a \u00e9t\u00e9 interrompu pendant quinze.<br>Ils disent que c\u2019\u00e9tait une histoire d\u2019amour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Monument&rsquo;
