Most \u0151sz van, sz\u00f3val kint is p\u00e1r\u00e1s a leveg\u0151. Szombaton \u00e9s vas\u00e1rnap kikapcsoltam a telefont, \u00e9s leraktam az asztalra. H\u00e9tf\u0151n bevittem egy szerel\u0151h\u00f6z, de akkor \u00e9ppen m\u0171k\u00f6d\u00f6tt az USB-C port. M\u00e9g ott helyben, Avignonban bevittem egy arab szerel\u0151h\u00f6z, aki kipucolta a portot, kif\u00fajta leveg\u0151vel, de ut\u00e1na sem m\u0171k\u00f6d\u00f6tt. Holnap sz\u00e1raz id\u0151 lesz, itt hagyom megint az ablakban a telefont. Rem\u00e9lem a legjobbakat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Amikor vettem a telefont, k\u00e9rtem r\u00e1 biztos\u00edt\u00e1st, de ezt ma sem tal\u00e1ltam sehol a telefon dokumentumai k\u00f6z\u00f6tt. Lehet, az \u00fcgyint\u00e9z\u0151 nem teljes\u00edtette a k\u00e9r\u00e9semet? Most meg j\u00f3 dr\u00e1ga, majdnem harminc eur\u00f3 lenne a biztos\u00edt\u00e1s havonta. H\u00e1t ez sz\u00e9p. First the pool cover jammed because of a seemingly harmless change in the water level, then my supposedly waterproof phone started corroding and complaining about a wet connector. Instead of postcard-perfect Provence, my days are currently filled with screws, sensors and misbehaving USB-C ports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You\u2019d think a swimming pool is simple: you just dig a big hole, fill it with water and you\u2019re done. But no. If you leave a bucket of tap water out in the open air, it will eventually go stale and change colour a bit; oh, and natural sunlight really only keeps it warm in July and August. So the water in our pool has to be kept moving and disinfected all the time. And it also helps to cover it at night: that way it cools down more slowly and the heat pump has less work to do during the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Right now it\u2019s this cover that\u2019s giving us a headache. This pool has a shutter. It works on a similar principle to an electric roller blind: inside the cylinder that the shutter rolls onto there is a motor; the whole thing sits under water, separated from the \u201csplashing\u201d area by a partition wall. The slats of the shutter are filled with foam, so, like a swim ring, they always float to the surface of the water. When I start the motor, it begins to unroll the shutter; only while on a window gravity pulls the blind downwards, in our case it starts to glide across the surface of the water towards the opposite wall. The problem is exactly this water surface, or more precisely the height of the water level. The shutter is hidden from the side by the partition wall and from above by a wooden plank (the one you can jump into the water from). Between the top of the partition wall and the plank there is a ten-centimetre gap where the shutter comes out; but whereas on a window blind the slats definitely come out through the opening provided for them, here there are no guide rails at either edge \u2013 the water surface itself guides the shutter out. So if the water level changes by more than ten centimetres, the shutter runs into one wall or the other. And that is exactly what I failed to notice on Sunday evening. There was no dramatic drop in the water level, just enough for the water to reach only to the top of the partition wall, so the shutter lay neatly on top of the wall. The motor managed to push it over the wall for a while, but halfway it stopped; the part of the shutter resting on the wall had simply become too heavy. Oh, and in the meantime it had unrolled the shutter completely off the motor shaft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once the mechanism stopped, I could already see that the water level was the problem; it took me about an hour and a half to raise it. I can only raise the water level with a garden hose, and this is an eleven-metre pool. Then I started the shutter again, but it could no longer push the unrolled slats outwards, it just crumpled them further. At the time all I really noticed was that the motor had stopped. I was worried then; later I realised I hadn\u2019t burnt out the motor by forcing it, the safety sensors had just kicked in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Monday morning, in pouring rain, I spent four hours working on the shutter. I took out some twenty screws from the shutter casing to get access, and still couldn\u2019t do anything with it. This shutter is a little over eleven metres long and so heavy that I couldn\u2019t even move it. And of course the fifty-something women turned up to flirt again; despite the driving rain one of them was happily swimming around me in the water. Around lunchtime I gave up and left the shutter as it was. In the evening I took it apart again, but all I managed to do was roll the previously pushed-out slats back up into a heap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The repair guy came out on Wednesday. They had it sorted in an hour and a half. The solution itself is ridiculously simple: because this shutter has no side frame, the slats can be pulled sideways out of each other. It took two people; they grabbed it at both ends, pulled it outwards a little, which separated the slats, and then they could slide out sideways the slat that had been resting on the partition wall. (By then I had already corrected the water level.) The motor could easily push out a shutter that weighed only half as much, while one of the guys held the edge and guided it so it would come out in the right direction. After an hour and a half of work the repairmen simply walked off. Next week I\u2019ll be the one putting the reinforcement screws back in, and I\u2019ll go over the automatic water-level controller once more as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My Waterproof Phone Is Rusting!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I\u2019m annoyed that there is always something wrong with something. These screwless metal-and-plastic alloy phone cases all have the same weak point: the USB-C port where they draw their power. Two weeks ago my phone started warning me that the connector was wet. Like everyone else, I keep my phone in my pocket. I suppose several things are working together here: I have it with me at the seaside, and I carry it while I\u2019m working in the rain; and in my room I can\u2019t really dry it out because the air is always a bit humid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When it fell into the pool in the summer, I put it out on a south-facing windowsill for a day afterwards. Now it\u2019s autumn, so the air outside is humid as well. On Saturday and Sunday I turned the phone off and left it on the table. On Monday I took it to a repair shop, but at that moment the USB-C port was working perfectly. Just in case, I didn\u2019t plug a cable into it afterwards either; I charged it wirelessly \u2013 which is annoyingly slow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today in Avignon I tried it again (because my bigger power bank connects in the usual cabled way \u2013 and that was the only one I had with me); the phone started beeping immediately. Right there in Avignon I took it to an Arab repairman, who cleaned out the port and blew it out with compressed air, but it still didn\u2019t work afterwards. Tomorrow the weather is supposed to be dry, so I\u2019ll leave the phone on the windowsill again. I\u2019m hoping for the best.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When I bought the phone, I asked for insurance for it, but today I couldn\u2019t find a trace of it anywhere in the paperwork. Maybe the clerk never processed my request. Now it would be really expensive: the insurance would cost almost thirty euros a month. Great. The factory warranty covers every type of fault \u2013 except the ones that happen most often. Those are what the insurance would be for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Les-Baux-de-Provence, 2025.10.22.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Avec cette piscine, ce n\u2019est que des probl\u00e8mes<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Depuis que j\u2019ai une piscine et un t\u00e9l\u00e9phone soi-disant \u00e9tanche, j\u2019ai l\u2019impression qu\u2019ils se sont ligu\u00e9s pour me cr\u00e9er des soucis en continu. D\u2019abord, le volet de la piscine s\u2019est coinc\u00e9 \u00e0 cause d\u2019une variation de niveau d\u2019eau \u00e0 peine visible, puis mon fameux t\u00e9l\u00e9phone \u00ab waterproof \u00bb a commenc\u00e9 \u00e0 rouiller et \u00e0 se plaindre d\u2019un connecteur humide. Ces derniers temps, la carte postale proven\u00e7ale a laiss\u00e9 place aux vis, aux capteurs de s\u00e9curit\u00e9 et aux ports USB-C capricieux.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Au d\u00e9but, on croit que c\u2019est simple : on creuse un grand trou, on le remplit d\u2019eau et tout ira bien. Eh bien non. Si on laisse un seau d\u2019eau du robinet \u00e0 l\u2019air libre, au bout d\u2019un moment il tourne et se d\u00e9colore un peu ; et la lumi\u00e8re naturelle du soleil n\u2019arrive vraiment \u00e0 le maintenir chaud qu\u2019en juillet\u2013ao\u00fbt. Donc l\u2019eau de notre piscine doit \u00eatre en mouvement et d\u00e9sinfect\u00e9e en permanence. Et ce n\u2019est pas plus mal si on la couvre la nuit : elle se refroidit plus lentement et la pompe \u00e0 chaleur a moins de travail pendant la journ\u00e9e.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">En ce moment, c\u2019est justement cette couverture qui nous pose probl\u00e8me. Cette piscine est \u00e9quip\u00e9e d\u2019un volet roulant. Il fonctionne un peu comme un volet roulant \u00e9lectrique de fen\u00eatre : dans le cylindre sur lequel on enroule le volet se trouve un moteur ; tout l\u2019ensemble est sous l\u2019eau, s\u00e9par\u00e9 de la partie \u00ab baignade \u00bb par une cloison. Les lames du volet sont remplies de mousse, donc comme une bou\u00e9e elles remontent toujours \u00e0 la surface de l\u2019eau. Quand j\u2019actionne le moteur, il commence \u00e0 d\u00e9rouler le volet ; sauf que, alors que sur une fen\u00eatre la gravit\u00e9 tire le volet vers le bas, chez nous il se met \u00e0 glisser \u00e0 la surface de l\u2019eau vers le mur d\u2019en face. Le probl\u00e8me vient pr\u00e9cis\u00e9ment de cette surface de l\u2019eau, ou plut\u00f4t de la hauteur du niveau. Le volet est masqu\u00e9 lat\u00e9ralement par la cloison et, au-dessus, par une planche en bois (celle depuis laquelle on peut plonger). Entre le haut de la cloison et la planche il y a un espace d\u2019une dizaine de centim\u00e8tres par lequel le volet passe ; sauf que, alors que sur un volet de fen\u00eatre les lames sortent forc\u00e9ment par l\u2019ouverture pr\u00e9vue pour elles, ici il n\u2019y a pas de rails de guidage sur les c\u00f4t\u00e9s \u2013 c\u2019est la surface de l\u2019eau elle-m\u00eame qui guide le volet. Du coup, si le niveau de l\u2019eau varie de plus de dix centim\u00e8tres, le volet vient buter contre l\u2019un des murs. Et c\u2019est exactement ce que je n\u2019ai pas vu dimanche soir. Le niveau de l\u2019eau n\u2019avait pas tellement baiss\u00e9, juste assez pour que l\u2019eau arrive pile au sommet de la cloison, et le volet s\u2019est alors gentiment pos\u00e9 sur le dessus du mur. Le moteur a r\u00e9ussi \u00e0 le pousser un moment, puis il s\u2019est arr\u00eat\u00e9 \u00e0 mi-course : le volet pos\u00e9 sur le mur \u00e9tait devenu trop lourd. Et entre-temps, il avait d\u00e9roul\u00e9 tout le volet de l\u2019axe du moteur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Une fois le m\u00e9canisme arr\u00eat\u00e9, j\u2019ai bien vu que le probl\u00e8me venait du niveau d\u2019eau ; il m\u2019a fallu environ une heure et demie pour le remonter. Je ne peux le faire monter qu\u2019avec un tuyau d\u2019arrosage, et la piscine fait onze m\u00e8tres de long. Ensuite j\u2019ai relanc\u00e9 le volet, mais il n\u2019arrivait plus \u00e0 repousser vers l\u2019ext\u00e9rieur les lames d\u00e9roul\u00e9es, il ne faisait que les froisser davantage. Sur le moment, tout ce que j\u2019ai per\u00e7u, c\u2019est que le moteur s\u2019\u00e9tait arr\u00eat\u00e9. J\u2019\u00e9tais inquiet ; avec le recul je sais que je ne l\u2019ai pas cram\u00e9 en for\u00e7ant, ce sont simplement les capteurs de s\u00e9curit\u00e9 qui se sont d\u00e9clench\u00e9s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lundi matin, sous des trombes d\u2019eau, j\u2019ai pass\u00e9 quatre heures \u00e0 bricoler le volet. J\u2019ai retir\u00e9 une vingtaine de vis du coffre pour pouvoir y acc\u00e9der, et je n\u2019ai quand m\u00eame rien pu en faire. Ce volet de un peu plus de onze m\u00e8tres est tellement lourd que je n\u2019arrivais m\u00eame pas \u00e0 le bouger. Et bien s\u00fbr, les quinquag\u00e9naires sont revenues faire connaissance ; malgr\u00e9 la pluie battante, l\u2019une d\u2019elles nageait autour de moi dans la piscine. \u00c0 l\u2019heure du d\u00e9jeuner, j\u2019ai abandonn\u00e9 et laiss\u00e9 le volet comme \u00e7a. Le soir, je l\u2019ai red\u00e9mont\u00e9, mais tout ce que j\u2019ai r\u00e9ussi \u00e0 faire, c\u2019est d\u2019enrouler en tas les lames qui d\u00e9passaient.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Le d\u00e9panneur est venu mercredi. Ils ont r\u00e9gl\u00e9 \u00e7a en une heure et demie. La solution est d\u2019une simplicit\u00e9 d\u00e9sarmante : comme ce volet n\u2019a pas de cadre lat\u00e9ral, on peut tirer les lames lat\u00e9ralement les unes hors des autres. Il fallait \u00eatre deux : ils l\u2019ont saisi aux deux extr\u00e9mit\u00e9s, ont tir\u00e9 un peu vers l\u2019ext\u00e9rieur, ce qui a s\u00e9par\u00e9 les lames, puis ils ont pu faire glisser sur le c\u00f4t\u00e9 celle qui reposait sur la cloison. (Entre-temps j\u2019avais d\u00e9j\u00e0 corrig\u00e9 le niveau de l\u2019eau.) Un volet deux fois plus l\u00e9ger, le moteur a pu le pousser sans probl\u00e8me, pendant que l\u2019un des gars tenait le bord et le guidait pour qu\u2019il parte dans la bonne direction. Apr\u00e8s une heure et demie de travail, les techniciens sont simplement repartis. La semaine prochaine, ce sera \u00e0 moi de remettre les vis de renfort et de revoir encore une fois l\u2019automatisme de r\u00e9glage du niveau d\u2019eau.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mon t\u00e9l\u00e9phone \u00ab \u00e9tanche \u00bb se met \u00e0 rouiller !<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00c7a m\u2019\u00e9nerve qu\u2019il y ait toujours quelque chose qui cloche ! Ces coques de t\u00e9l\u00e9phone en alliage m\u00e9tal\u2013plastique, sans une seule vis, ont toutes le m\u00eame point faible : le port USB-C par lequel elles se rechargent. Il y a deux semaines, mon t\u00e9l\u00e9phone a commenc\u00e9 \u00e0 me signaler que le connecteur \u00e9tait humide. Comme tout le monde, je garde mon t\u00e9l\u00e9phone dans ma poche. Demain, le temps doit \u00eatre sec, je vais \u00e0 nouveau laisser le t\u00e9l\u00e9phone sur le rebord de la fen\u00eatre.
