I\u2019m getting ready to travel with just a small backpack, counting every gram, every euro and minden rokont, who might get a little gift. Between cappuccinos, kebab and grumbling about the French work ethic, I secretly hope Avignon and I will cross paths a million more times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today I rented a tiny storage room where I\u2019ll keep the contents of my room during the winter months, along with my bike. I chose Avignon because the city already has pretty decent public transport, in case I move on again in the spring. Because I really don\u2019t know for sure what I\u2019ll be doing in spring. For now I only have plans. And Avignon is not exactly an impossible distance from this hotel either.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The programme for the afternoon after that was simply walking and reading \u2013 in one of my favourite cities. At the same time I started buying souvenirs, because I want to visit a lot of people and I don\u2019t want to arrive empty-handed anywhere. It\u2019s not a cheap idea, though. I bought, for example, a fridge magnet for five euros and colouring books for the kids for twelve euros. It may not give a realistic picture, but it does illustrate quite vividly the fact that I have sixteen first cousins \u2013 plus friends. I\u2019m not going to visit everyone, but still: the plan is to fill a small backpack with about a hundred euros\u2019 worth of tiny gifts. I honestly can\u2019t complain, because I\u2019m doing this for my own amusement, I really do like bringing presents \u2013 it just means I have to plan around it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It will be awkward, though, if I happen to get something myself and have nowhere to put it. Every centimetre and every gram in my bag will be accounted for. I\u2019ve never done anything this crazy before, travelling without a proper travel bag.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even the question of which three shirts to take out of the fourteen feels painful. \ud83d\ude42 If \u2013 and only if \u2013 I\u2019m not allowed to take more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I\u2019m adding small local sweets to the gift basket; and what surprise should I choose for myself?! I\u2019ll just stand in front of the mirror and be surprised that I still don\u2019t have more hair, only longer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the way home I\u2019m listening to a talk show. Personally, I\u2019d give the Nobel Prize to whoever convinced President Trump that if he manufactures peace instead of conflicts, he\u2019ll immediately get a Nobel Prize. Because as long as he\u2019s straining that empty brain of his with this, at least he\u2019s not busy riling up other people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A sign in the pedestrian street says: \u201cHere we make the best cappuccino in town\u201d \u2013 and it\u2019s true. Last time I didn\u2019t even notice the sign, I just dropped in by chance and remembered the place, which is run by a young Mexican couple. And what kind of sandwiches do they serve? Yes, Mexican ones. \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On their bathroom door there\u2019s a cheap little piece of wisdom: happiness is not a goal, but a journey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In fact, few modern places use authentic Proven\u00e7al soap, even though it\u2019s practical: the egg-shaped soap is not sitting on the edge of the sink where the moisture melts it. In the middle of the egg there is a thin, tube-shaped hole. Either they hang it above the tap by a piece of string, or \u2013 as here \u2013 they slide it onto a slim, elegant rod. That way the soap only wears down when it\u2019s actually in use, and it doesn\u2019t leave marks on the tap. Plus, Proven\u00e7al soaps are boiled from olive oil, which really does give a more silky feel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Also, today I had ice cream and a bit of kebab; this time not Berlin kebab but the Turkish kind, and I sat out on a terrace with a lemon beer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They didn\u2019t let me into the souvenir shop of the Papal Palace because I didn\u2019t have a ticket. They\u2019re simply too lazy to keep track of which visitor has a ticket and who isn\u2019t allowed to go further into the building, so they just give up that extra income they could get from passers-by. It\u2019s so French\u2026 Around here you really have to explain carefully the link between the work done and the pay at the end of the month; you really have to justify why it\u2019s in an employee\u2019s own interest to actually do their job. On the other hand, it\u2019s nice to do business with the French because they care about quality. But \u2013 in any line of business \u2013 it\u2019s still better to choose an Arab service provider, because they do the job they\u2019re paid for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Avignon, I hope we\u2019ll be lucky enough to meet each other a million more times!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thursday, 23\/10\/2025<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ambiances d\u2019Avignon<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Aujourd\u2019hui, Avignon s\u2019est transform\u00e9e \u00e0 la fois en garde-meubles, en terrain de jeu et en d\u00e9cor pour mes projets de printemps encore tr\u00e8s flous. Je me pr\u00e9pare \u00e0 voyager avec un simple petit sac \u00e0 dos, en comptant les grammes, les euros et les proches qui pourraient recevoir un petit cadeau. Entre cappuccino, kebab et r\u00e2leries sur l\u2019\u00e9thique de travail \u00e0 la fran\u00e7aise, j\u2019esp\u00e8re en secret qu\u2019Avignon et moi nous recroiserons encore un million de fois.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Aujourd\u2019hui, j\u2019ai lou\u00e9 un petit local de stockage o\u00f9 je vais entreposer le contenu de ma chambre pour les mois d\u2019hiver, avec mon v\u00e9lo. \u00c0 Avignon, justement, parce que la ville a d\u00e9j\u00e0 un assez bon r\u00e9seau de transports en commun, au cas o\u00f9 je d\u00e9m\u00e9nagerais de nouveau au printemps. Parce qu\u2019en r\u00e9alit\u00e9, je ne sais pas vraiment ce que je ferai au printemps. Pour l\u2019instant, je n\u2019ai que des projets. Et Avignon n\u2019est pas une distance insurmontable depuis cet h\u00f4tel non plus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">L\u2019apr\u00e8s-midi qui a suivi, le programme, c\u2019\u00e9tait fl\u00e2ner et lire \u2013 dans l\u2019une de mes villes pr\u00e9f\u00e9r\u00e9es. J\u2019ai aussi commenc\u00e9 \u00e0 acheter des souvenirs, parce que je veux rendre visite \u00e0 beaucoup de gens et je ne veux arriver les mains vides chez personne. Ce n\u2019est pas une id\u00e9e bon march\u00e9. J\u2019ai achet\u00e9, par exemple, un magnet pour le frigo \u00e0 cinq euros, et des cahiers de coloriage pour les enfants \u00e0 douze euros. M\u00eame si cela ne donne pas une image totalement fid\u00e8le, cela illustre bien le fait que j\u2019ai seize cousins germains, sans compter les amis. Je ne vais pas rendre visite \u00e0 tout le monde, mais quand m\u00eame : le plan, c\u2019est de remplir un petit sac \u00e0 dos avec une centaine d\u2019euros de petits cadeaux. En v\u00e9rit\u00e9, je ne me plains pas, je fais \u00e7a pour mon propre plaisir, j\u2019aime vraiment apporter des pr\u00e9sents \u2013 il faut juste un peu d\u2019organisation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">En revanche, ce sera g\u00eanant si jamais je re\u00e7ois quelque chose, parce que je n\u2019aurai nulle part o\u00f9 le mettre. Chaque centim\u00e8tre et chaque gramme seront calcul\u00e9s dans mon sac. Je n\u2019ai encore jamais fait une folie pareille : voyager sans vraie valise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">C\u2019est d\u00e9j\u00e0 une question douloureuse de savoir quelles trois chemises emporter parmi les quatorze. \ud83d\ude42 Si \u2013 et seulement si \u2013 je n\u2019ai pas le droit d\u2019en prendre plus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">J\u2019ajoute de petits bonbons locaux au panier-cadeau ; et pour moi, quelle surprise choisir ?! Je me mettrai devant le miroir et je m\u2019\u00e9tonnerai, une fois de plus, que je n\u2019aie pas plus de cheveux, seulement des cheveux plus longs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sur le chemin du retour, j\u2019\u00e9coute une \u00e9mission de reportage. Moi, je donnerais bien le prix Nobel \u00e0 celui qui a r\u00e9ussi \u00e0 convaincre le pr\u00e9sident Trump que s\u2019il fabrique des paix au lieu des conflits, il recevra tout de suite un prix Nobel. Parce que tant qu\u2019il se casse la t\u00eate avec \u00e7a, dans son cerveau vide, au moins il ne passe pas son temps \u00e0 monter les autres les uns contre les autres.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pancarte dans la rue pi\u00e9tonne : \u00ab Ici, on pr\u00e9pare le meilleur cappuccino de la ville \u00bb ; et c\u2019est vrai. La fois pr\u00e9c\u00e9dente, je n\u2019avais pas remarqu\u00e9 l\u2019inscription, j\u2019\u00e9tais juste tomb\u00e9 l\u00e0 par hasard et j\u2019avais m\u00e9moris\u00e9 l\u2019endroit, tenu par un jeune couple mexicain. Et quels sandwiches peut-on y manger ? Des mexicains, \u00e9videmment. \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sur la porte de leurs toilettes, une petite sagesse \u00e0 deux sous : le bonheur n\u2019est pas un but, mais un chemin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sinon, peu d\u2019endroits modernes utilisent du vrai savon proven\u00e7al, alors que c\u2019est tr\u00e8s pratique : le savon en forme d\u2019\u0153uf n\u2019est pas pos\u00e9 sur le bord du lavabo, l\u00e0 o\u00f9 l\u2019humidit\u00e9 le fait fondre. Au centre de l\u2019\u0153uf, il y a un trou fin, en forme de tube. Soit on l\u2019attache au-dessus du robinet avec un fil, soit \u2013 comme ici \u2013 on l\u2019enfile sur une petite tige \u00e9l\u00e9gante. Ainsi, le savon ne s\u2019use que lorsqu\u2019on l\u2019utilise, et il ne laisse pas de traces sur le robinet. En plus, les savons proven\u00e7aux sont fabriqu\u00e9s \u00e0 base d\u2019huile d\u2019olive, ce qui donne vraiment une sensation plus soyeuse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Aujourd\u2019hui, j\u2019ai mang\u00e9 une glace, puis un peu de kebab ; cette fois, pas le kebab berlinois, mais le turc, et je me suis install\u00e9 en terrasse pour boire une bi\u00e8re au citron.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On ne m\u2019a pas laiss\u00e9 entrer dans la boutique de souvenirs du Palais des Papes parce que je n\u2019avais pas de billet.
