Apart<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today it\u2019s my thousand-euro phone, last week it was the bike brakes, tomorrow probably the coffee machine \u2013 and in the meantime I\u2019m supposed to fit four months of life into a single school backpack. While every gadget around me quietly dies, I\u2019m hunting for appointments at offices, settling debts, fixing documents, trying to sketch out a future. Some days it really feels like \u201ceverything whole has broken\u201d, and at the same time I\u2019m already daydreaming about the next thermal bath and a greasy late-night snack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today I entrusted my thousand-euro phone to an Arab guy. The word \u201cArab\u201d here isn\u2019t meant as a prejudice, or at least not in a negative way. Here, \u201cArab\u201d is everyone to whom you don\u2019t have to explain the connection between hard work and income. Not every Arab is hardworking, but anyone who is hardworking is certainly not a French person born and stuck in one place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So I handed my thousand-euro phone over to a repairman, because the USB port of this supposedly waterproof device has rusted; and of course the warranty doesn\u2019t cover that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last week I paid ninety euros to have the bike brakes replaced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The service centre refuses to deal with my hundred-thousand-forint headphones, and the time I\u2019d spend filing a complaint already costs more than their extra-discounted seventy-euro purchase price.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My coffee machine has also decided to act up; at the moment it\u2019s only willing to make ristretto, and even then it burns the grounds first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The adapter cable between my phone and the TV screen has a contact fault, and the antenna-type version of it gives useless picture quality. With these I can switch my phone into \u201cdesktop computer\u201d mode. That\u2019s one of the reasons I bought this expensive phone in the first place: so I wouldn\u2019t have to buy and lug around a desktop computer as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So today the quote \u201ceverything whole has broken\u201d keeps popping into my head.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And the endless to-do list.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I have to start another move. I need to pack a plain school backpack in such a way that I can live out of it for four months! Quite a little madness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I have to get an appointment to renew my driving licence and passport, and to modify my phone contract. I need an appointment to sort out my debt with the Hungarian social security office. For three years now I haven\u2019t had a job in Hungary \u2013 or even an address. My Hungarian ID card literally says \u201chomeless\u201d. In that context, the whole driving-licence admin becomes absurd, especially since the very first step is: get a piece of paper from the doctor responsible for your address\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the same time, I\u2019m scheduling times with friends and family as if I were some extremely busy person. In reality, I just want to get to too many places.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meanwhile I told Mr Daniel \u2013 a man I respect greatly, probably only me (here, kindly meant people tend to be the ones looked down on) \u2013 that I don\u2019t want to go to Hungary. Why? Because even Luxembourg is cheaper, and even Turkey has a better political system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet while I\u2019m biking, I\u2019m busy planning which thermal baths to visit and in which town I\u2019ll end the day with some gloriously fatty, unhealthy food. And I can hardly wait to finally sing karaoke in Hungarian again. It will probably be harder this way, if I can\u2019t just mumble made-up English through the whole song.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Arles, Monday, 27\/10\/2025<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tout fout le camp<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Aujourd\u2019hui, c\u2019est mon t\u00e9l\u00e9phone \u00e0 mille euros, la semaine derni\u00e8re c\u2019\u00e9taient les freins du v\u00e9lo, demain ce sera sans doute la machine \u00e0 caf\u00e9 \u2013 et pendant ce temps-l\u00e0, je dois faire tenir quatre mois de vie dans un simple sac \u00e0 dos d\u2019\u00e9colier. Tandis que tous mes gadgets rendent l\u2019\u00e2me les uns apr\u00e8s les autres, je cours apr\u00e8s des rendez-vous dans les administrations, je r\u00e8gle des dettes, je refais des papiers et j\u2019essaie d\u2019esquisser un avenir. Par moments, j\u2019ai vraiment l\u2019impression que \u00ab tout ce qui \u00e9tait entier s\u2019est bris\u00e9 \u00bb, et en m\u00eame temps je me surprends \u00e0 r\u00eaver d\u00e9j\u00e0 du prochain bain thermal et du gras d\u00eener de fin de journ\u00e9e.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Aujourd\u2019hui, j\u2019ai confi\u00e9 mon t\u00e9l\u00e9phone \u00e0 mille euros \u00e0 un Arabe. Le mot \u00ab Arabe \u00bb ici n\u2019est pas un pr\u00e9jug\u00e9, ou du moins pas dans un sens n\u00e9gatif. Ici, est \u00ab Arabe \u00bb celui \u00e0 qui l\u2019on n\u2019a pas besoin d\u2019expliquer le lien entre le travail et le revenu. Tous les Arabes ne sont pas travailleurs, mais quelqu\u2019un de vraiment travailleur n\u2019est certainement pas un Fran\u00e7ais n\u00e9 sur place et rest\u00e9 plant\u00e9 l\u00e0.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bref, j\u2019ai laiss\u00e9 mon t\u00e9l\u00e9phone \u00e0 mille euros chez un r\u00e9parateur, parce que le port USB de cet appareil pourtant \u00e9tanche a commenc\u00e9 \u00e0 rouiller ; et bien s\u00fbr, la garantie ne couvre pas \u00e7a.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">La semaine derni\u00e8re, j\u2019ai pay\u00e9 quatre-vingt-dix euros pour le changement des freins du v\u00e9lo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Le service apr\u00e8s-vente refuse de s\u2019occuper de mes \u00e9couteurs \u00e0 cent mille forints, et le temps que je passerais \u00e0 d\u00e9poser une r\u00e9clamation me co\u00fbterait d\u00e9j\u00e0 plus cher que leur prix d\u2019achat en super promo \u00e0 soixante-dix euros.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ma machine \u00e0 caf\u00e9, elle aussi, s\u2019est braqu\u00e9e ; en ce moment, elle n\u2019accepte de faire que des ristretti, et encore, apr\u00e8s avoir cram\u00e9 la mouture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Le c\u00e2ble adaptateur entre le t\u00e9l\u00e9phone et l\u2019\u00e9cran de t\u00e9l\u00e9 a un faux contact, et sa version avec antenne donne une qualit\u00e9 d\u2019image inutilisable. C\u2019est avec ces c\u00e2bles que je peux basculer mon t\u00e9l\u00e9phone en mode \u00ab ordinateur de bureau \u00bb. Entre autres, c\u2019est pour cela que j\u2019ai achet\u00e9 ce t\u00e9l\u00e9phone si cher : pour ne pas devoir acheter et trimballer aussi un ordinateur fixe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Alors aujourd\u2019hui, c\u2019est la phrase \u00ab tout ce qui \u00e9tait entier s\u2019est bris\u00e9 \u00bb qui me revient sans cesse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Et aussi la liste infinie des choses \u00e0 faire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Je dois attaquer un nouveau d\u00e9m\u00e9nagement. Il faut que je remplisse un simple sac d\u2019\u00e9colier de fa\u00e7on \u00e0 pouvoir vivre quatre mois uniquement avec ce qu\u2019il contient !
