Guests pick olives, dine to flamenco music and think they\u2019re just enjoying a charming themed day \u2013 while for us it\u2019s a season-end inventory of what the climate is doing. On paper it\u2019s the closing day, but in reality it feels more like a doorway into the next chapter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Driving between the villages, I could already see on every farm that the olive harvest had begun. They started yesterday and the day before, in the glorious weather. This year everyone will finish quickly; the crop is poor. Three years ago we did four trips with the van, last year two, this year a single load will be enough \u2013 as Mr Daniel complains. Here on the hotel estate there\u2019s less rain and more heat with every passing year. Less rainfall means less fruit, more heat means earlier ripening. I remember three years ago we harvested at the end of November, after my holiday in Barcelona \u2013 dark green, purple and black olives; last year we started on the eighth of November, and this time we only waited until the first of November because that\u2019s the date they had advertised to the guests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every year, on the hotel\u2019s last weekend, they organise an Olive Day: the kitchen prepares olive-based dishes, and in the afternoon guests can take part in the harvest (a brilliant and slightly evil business idea). The guests pick the olives for us, the crop stays here, the guest pays for the privilege of helping, and is happy about it. For the evening meal they invite a flamenco guitarist and a dancer. Meanwhile the whole town is still covered in fake cobwebs. After yesterday\u2019s Halloween I kept running into groups of children again today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Les Baux, 01\/11\/2025<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Le jour de cl\u00f4ture \u2013 qui n\u2019est pas le dernier<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Quand la r\u00e9colte des olives commence, l\u2019h\u00f4tel passe doucement en mode fermeture : moins de pluie, des r\u00e9coltes plus faibles, des olives qui m\u00fbrissent chaque ann\u00e9e un peu plus t\u00f4t. Les clients cueillent les olives, d\u00eenent sur fond de flamenco et ont l\u2019impression de profiter d\u2019une jolie animation \u2013 alors que pour nous, c\u2019est un inventaire de fin de saison sur l\u2019\u00e9tat du climat. Officiellement, c\u2019est le jour de cl\u00f4ture de l\u2019h\u00f4tel, mais pour moi, c\u2019est surtout un passage vers la suite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">En traversant les villages, j\u2019ai d\u00e9j\u00e0 vu sur chaque ferme que la r\u00e9colte des olives avait commenc\u00e9. Ils ont attaqu\u00e9 hier et avant-hier, sous un soleil \u00e9clatant. Cette ann\u00e9e, tout le monde aura vite fini : la r\u00e9colte n\u2019est pas bonne. Il y a trois ans, nous avons fait quatre allers-retours avec le fourgon, l\u2019an dernier deux, cette ann\u00e9e un seul voyage suffira \u2013 se plaint M. Daniel. Ici, sur le domaine de l\u2019h\u00f4tel, il y a chaque ann\u00e9e moins de pluie et plus de chaleur. Moins de pr\u00e9cipitations veut dire moins de fruits, plus de chaleur veut dire maturit\u00e9 plus pr\u00e9coce. Je me souviens qu\u2019il y a trois ans, nous avons r\u00e9colt\u00e9 fin novembre, apr\u00e8s mes vacances \u00e0 Barcelone \u2013 des olives vert fonc\u00e9, violettes, noires ; l\u2019an dernier, nous avons commenc\u00e9 le 8 novembre, et cette fois, nous n\u2019avons attendu le 1er novembre que parce que c\u2019est ce jour-l\u00e0 qu\u2019on avait annonc\u00e9 le programme aux clients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Chaque ann\u00e9e, le dernier week-end de l\u2019h\u00f4tel, on organise une Journ\u00e9e de l\u2019Olive : la cuisine pr\u00e9pare des plats \u00e0 base d\u2019olive et, l\u2019apr\u00e8s-midi, les clients peuvent participer \u00e0 la r\u00e9colte (id\u00e9e commerciale \u00e0 la fois g\u00e9niale et un peu sournoise). Les clients cueillent les olives \u00e0 notre place, la r\u00e9colte reste ici, le client paie pour avoir le droit d\u2019aider, et en plus il est content. Pour le d\u00eener du soir, on invite un guitariste de flamenco et une danseuse. Par ailleurs, la ville est encore pleine de toiles d\u2019araign\u00e9e d\u00e9coratives.
