A farewell lunch that kills my appetite, a box full of presents sent by post and one last evening walk to the toy-car museum in the neighbouring village neatly frame the end of the season. The hotel is closing, but my own story feels like it\u2019s just about to open up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At noon the last guest leaves.<br>Since eight in the morning I\u2019ve been packing away the sun loungers, winterising the swimming pool, switching off the outdoor lights and going over the remaining tasks with the manager.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">About the receptionist I\u2019ve learnt not only that she has a wonderful sense for natural make-up, but also that she is shamelessly young: twenty-two years old! Sometimes she can look so sensually that it feels almost impertinent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We have a farewell lunch together with the colleagues. I had to sit at the same table as the cleaning lady. I didn\u2019t have much of an appetite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At five I put down my work and start the next episode of the move. I\u2019ve packed all my stuff and prepared it for transport. I only have enough things left for one extra run, so today I don\u2019t actually need to go to Avignon to the storage unit; I\u2019ll go tomorrow, and then I\u2019ll take the rest on Wednesday, after my last day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Friday I sent a big box by post. I hope it arrives within a week, because next weekend I\u2019m meeting Zs\u00f3fi; it\u2019ll be awkward if the post is slow, because I mailed all the presents. It\u2019s more comfortable this way than carrying them on the plane, and not any more expensive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the evening I\u2019m going over to the neighbouring village one more time, for the last time; I\u2019ll eat a sandwich and some cake and have a look at the new toy-car museum-shop. The old man\u2019s hobby is building models; he exhibits and sells his creations there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Les Baux, Sunday, 02\/11\/2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dernier client, premiers cartons<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Le dernier client fait encore un petit signe apr\u00e8s le d\u00e9jeuner, pendant que je range d\u00e9j\u00e0 les transats et que j\u2019\u00e9cris dans ma t\u00eate le prochain \u00e9pisode du d\u00e9m\u00e9nagement. Un d\u00e9jeuner d\u2019adieu qui me coupe l\u2019app\u00e9tit, un carton de cadeaux exp\u00e9di\u00e9 par la poste et une derni\u00e8re promenade du soir jusqu\u2019au mus\u00e9e de petites voitures du village voisin encadrent joliment cette fin de saison. L\u2019h\u00f4tel ferme, mais mon propre r\u00e9cit, lui, semble \u00e0 peine commencer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00c0 midi, le dernier client s\u2019en va.<br>Depuis huit heures du matin, je range les transats, j\u2019hiverne la piscine, j\u2019\u00e9teins les \u00e9clairages ext\u00e9rieurs et je fais le point avec le directeur sur les t\u00e2ches restantes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">De la r\u00e9ceptionniste, je d\u00e9couvre non seulement qu\u2019elle a un sens incroyable du maquillage naturel, mais aussi qu\u2019elle est outrageusement jeune : vingt-deux ans ! Parfois, elle a un regard tellement sensuel que \u00e7a en devient presque insolent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">D\u00e9jeuner d\u2019adieu commun avec les coll\u00e8gues. J\u2019ai \u00e9t\u00e9 oblig\u00e9e de m\u2019asseoir \u00e0 la m\u00eame table que la femme de m\u00e9nage. Je n\u2019avais m\u00eame pas faim.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00c0 cinq heures, je pose les outils et j\u2019attaque le prochain \u00e9pisode du d\u00e9m\u00e9nagement. J\u2019ai emball\u00e9 toutes mes affaires, pr\u00eates pour le transport. Il ne me reste plus qu\u2019un seul trajet de plus \u00e0 faire, donc aujourd\u2019hui, je n\u2019ai m\u00eame pas besoin d\u2019aller jusqu\u2019\u00e0 Avignon, au box de stockage ; j\u2019irai demain, puis j\u2019emporterai le reste mercredi, apr\u00e8s ma derni\u00e8re journ\u00e9e.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Vendredi, j\u2019ai envoy\u00e9 un gros carton par la poste. J\u2019esp\u00e8re qu\u2019il arrivera en une semaine, parce que le week-end prochain je vois Zs\u00f3fi ; ce serait un peu la honte si la poste tra\u00eene, vu que j\u2019ai exp\u00e9di\u00e9 tous les cadeaux. Comme \u00e7a, c\u2019est plus confortable que de les transporter en avion, et pas plus cher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Le soir, je passe au village voisin, encore une fois, pour la derni\u00e8re fois ; je mange un sandwich et quelques g\u00e2teaux, et je vais voir le nouveau mus\u00e9e\u2013boutique de petites voitures.
