From a student dorm bed in Marseille, in just my underwear, with no coffee and no grand plan, I still feel oddly calm, determined and a bit mad as I look at the next four months that will officially be represented by one single bag. Maybe it all seems crazy right now, but I\u2019m hoping that one day the things I\u2019m about to do will make some sort of sense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I even surprised myself by fitting into a single school backpack.<br>There\u2019s one pile of clothes left outside, which I\u2019ll wear on the plane. The airline doesn\u2019t have a rule that says I can\u2019t look like a padded snowman, but it\u2019s no secret that the staff get a commission if they find an oversized piece of luggage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On top of that, I had this brainwave yesterday that for this four-month trip I shouldn\u2019t take the tough hiking backpack, but the one that\u2019s easiest to fold up tiny. Right now what I really need is a large, thin sack so I don\u2019t have to carry two bags around when I\u2019m not on a plane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is my third attempt at writing this entry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first time, my digital paper tablet ran out of battery. It has a factory fault: at twenty percent it starts hallucinating that the battery is empty and it\u2019s about to shut down, and then immediately switches off. Normally this doesn\u2019t matter much, because this cardboard-thin device will still last a week on a single charge \u2013 there\u2019s nothing in it that lights up \u2013 but this time I simply forgot to plug it in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After that, I spent an hour testing which of my supposedly standardised USB-C ports and cables it was willing to cooperate with. I didn\u2019t bring a separate cable for every gadget I own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the second attempt, I fell asleep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Right now it\u2019s Friday morning, 11:30 a.m. Today that still counts as early morning. I\u2019m still \u201cin pyjamas\u201d\u2026 I don\u2019t even own pyjamas! I\u2019m lying in bed in my underwear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So, yesterday I started the day in Avignon, in my little storage unit. I crammed everything that matters into one school backpack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Arles I went to the local employment office, because officially I\u2019m unemployed. The woman at the desk asked if I get any benefits from Hungary. I told her I no longer have an address there, or an active tax number or social security number.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I had time to kill, so while the afternoon storm passed, I sat down in a bar to write my blog, then later invited myself to a pastry in a caf\u00e9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the evening: Marseille. The student hostel is, as usual, perfectly fine, and so is the Afghan sandwich place in the next street.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s hard to live cheaply around here. To pull it off you need serious planning and awareness. Sitting down anywhere \u2013 literally anywhere \u2013 is expensive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At least right now, to me, everything feels too expensive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By half past ten I was already in bed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I forgot the messages. I want to send a few lines to some colleagues I actually like.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And I\u2019ll go to the sports shop and buy a cheap, big, but easily foldable bag.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s the entire to-do list for today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Right now I\u2019m rested, calm, determined and a little bit crazy. Allong\u00e9e sur un lit de foyer \u00e9tudiant \u00e0 Marseille, simplement en sous-v\u00eatements, sans caf\u00e9 ni grand plan, je me sens pourtant repos\u00e9e, calme, d\u00e9termin\u00e9e et un peu folle en regardant ces quatre prochains mois qui vont officiellement tenir dans un seul sac. Aujourd\u2019hui, tout \u00e7a ressemble encore \u00e0 une folie, mais j\u2019esp\u00e8re qu\u2019un jour les choses que je m\u2019appr\u00eate \u00e0 faire finiront par prendre un sens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Moi-m\u00eame, j\u2019ai \u00e9t\u00e9 \u00e9tonn\u00e9e de r\u00e9ussir \u00e0 faire tenir ma vie dans un seul sac d\u2019\u00e9colier.<br>Il reste une pile de v\u00eatements \u00e0 part, que je mettrai sur moi dans l\u2019avion. La compagnie a\u00e9rienne n\u2019a pas de r\u00e8gle disant que je n\u2019ai pas le droit de ressembler \u00e0 un gros bibendum ; en revanche, il n\u2019est plus vraiment secret que le personnel touche une commission quand il rep\u00e8re un bagage trop volumineux.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">En plus de \u00e7a, j\u2019ai eu hier cette lubie : pour ces quatre mois de voyage, au lieu d\u2019emporter le sac de rando ultra solide, je vais prendre celui qu\u2019on peut plier en tout petit. L\u00e0, tout de suite, il me faudrait un grand sac tr\u00e8s fin, pour ne pas avoir \u00e0 transporter deux sacs quand je ne suis pas dans un avion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">C\u2019est la troisi\u00e8me fois que je recommence ce billet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">La premi\u00e8re fois, ma tablette \u00e0 encre \u00e9lectronique s\u2019est d\u00e9charg\u00e9e. Elle a un d\u00e9faut de fabrication : \u00e0 vingt pour cent de batterie, elle se met \u00e0 halluciner qu\u2019elle va s\u2019\u00e9teindre, et s\u2019\u00e9teint presque aussit\u00f4t. D\u2019habitude, ce n\u2019est pas bien grave, parce que cet objet aussi \u00e9pais qu\u2019un morceau de carton tient facilement une semaine sur une seule charge \u2013 il n\u2019y a rien dedans qui s\u2019allume \u2013, mais cette fois-ci, j\u2019ai oubli\u00e9 de la brancher \u00e0 temps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ensuite, j\u2019ai pass\u00e9 une heure \u00e0 tester avec quels ports et c\u00e2bles USB-C \u2013 en th\u00e9orie normalis\u00e9s \u2013 elle acceptait de fonctionner.
