Koncentr\u00e1lni kell. Nem nehezemre esik, s\u0151t\u2026 <br>Csak nem veszem \u00e9szre, amikor \u00f6sszekeverek dolgokat. Akkor t\u0171nik fel, hogy nyakatekert, latin sz\u00f3rendet haszn\u00e1lok, amikor furcs\u00e1n n\u00e9znek r\u00e1m. Most p\u00e9ld\u00e1ul \u00e9pp azt olvastam, hogy \u00e9n voltam az egyetlen a F\u0151 t\u00e9ri k\u00e1v\u00e9z\u00f3ban, aki egyed\u00fcl forralt borozik. Az \u00e9n eml\u00e9kem az, hogy a forralt bor finom volt, a k\u00f6nyv pedig \u00e9rdekes. Sz\u00f3val az este sz\u00e1momra el\u00e9g j\u00f3 volt. <br>Azonban a k\u00e9zzelfoghat\u00f3 vil\u00e1g tal\u00e1n enn\u00e9l is \u00e9rdekesebb lehet. Sitting on a balcony facing a desert sunset, I answer a few sentence fragments I noted down in Hungary in November 2025: about the language of thought, the effort of speaking Hungarian, and what it means to be alone. Sipping mulled wine and balancing between languages, I watch how every sentence turns into a mirror.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019ve gathered a few sentence fragments noted down in Hungary in November 2025.\u201d<br>To which I\u2019m replying on December 10, 2025, sitting on my balcony in Harghada, looking out at the desert sunset.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat language do you think in?\u201d<br>This is not the right question. Because while I\u2019m thinking, I don\u2019t pay attention to what language I\u2019m thinking in. The same is true for dreams. Communication is a different matter. I always try to answer in the language in which I\u2019m asked. A lot of people do this; I, for example, learned it from Bea, who has been bilingual since birth. She didn\u2019t base it on her partner\u2019s native language or the primary language of the place, but on the last sentence she heard, and reacted to that. In that group it was normal that the people spoke three or four languages at once, and we sometimes switched them sentence by sentence. So I don\u2019t think in a particular language; sticking with the example above, when I hear the word \u201capple\u201d and then the next moment the word \u201cpomme\u201d is spoken, there is no internal translation starting up in my head, like: ah, we\u2019re talking about apples. In the moment the word is spoken, what pops into my mind is a round red thing Snow White shouldn\u2019t have eaten.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">(It\u2019s a bit like when a toddler says \u201cwoof-woof\u201d. I\u2019m not going to ask back where they saw that spaniel; I\u2019ll answer in the way the question came: Where is the woof?)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIs it hard for you to speak Hungarian?\u201d<br>Now that was the right question. I have to concentrate. It\u2019s not that it\u2019s difficult for me, quite the opposite\u2026 I just don\u2019t notice when I start mixing things up. I only realise I\u2019m using a complicated, Latin-style word order when people start looking at me strangely. By now I have to remind myself that the advantage of Hungarian is that we have a word for everything, so I can always phrase things simply. I often search for the names of things. It\u2019s a bit as if alma, pomme, apple and Apfel were all synonyms of each other, and I can\u2019t be sure the relevant version will be the one that comes to mind first.<br>And there are French examples of this too, of course. After a while my colleagues were joking that I could answer anything with a one- or two-word sentence. It might be that just a few moments earlier I had been listening to a Hungarian report where you could phrase things briefly, but in French those same short answers might not be clear enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe can\u2019t hear the other person.\u201d<br>Do I hear what other people are saying?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou\u2019re alone.\u201d<br>I had come across this sentence a few days earlier as well. Just now I happened to read that I was the only one in the Main Square caf\u00e9 drinking mulled wine alone. My own memory is that the mulled wine was good and the book was interesting. So for me, it was a pretty good evening. Still, the tangible world might be even more interesting than that. I don\u2019t know.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s not necessary, I\u2019ll manage.\u201d<br>Because I can manage. For me it\u2019s no big deal to be independent, to walk half an hour if necessary. I just see that life hasn\u2019t been this harsh with everyone else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Entre les langues, en plein d\u00e9sert<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dans quelle langue pense-t-on quand m\u00eame les r\u00eaves changent de langue ? Assise sur un balcon face au coucher de soleil du d\u00e9sert, je r\u00e9ponds \u00e0 quelques fragments de phrases not\u00e9s en Hongrie en novembre 2025 : sur la langue de la pens\u00e9e, l\u2019effort de parler hongrois et ce que signifie la solitude. En sirotant du vin chaud et en jonglant entre plusieurs langues, j\u2019observe comment chaque phrase devient un miroir.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00ab J\u2019ai rassembl\u00e9 quelques fragments de phrases not\u00e9s en Hongrie en novembre 2025. \u00bb<br>Auxquels je r\u00e9ponds le 10 d\u00e9cembre 2025, depuis mon balcon \u00e0 Harghada, tourn\u00e9 vers le coucher de soleil sur le d\u00e9sert.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00ab Dans quelle langue est-ce que tu r\u00e9fl\u00e9chis ? \u00bb<br>Ce n\u2019est pas la bonne question. Parce que pendant que je r\u00e9fl\u00e9chis, je ne fais pas attention \u00e0 la langue dans laquelle je pense. C\u2019est pareil pour les r\u00eaves. La communication, c\u2019est autre chose. J\u2019essaie toujours de r\u00e9pondre dans la langue dans laquelle on me parle. Beaucoup de gens font \u00e7a ; moi, par exemple, je l\u2019ai appris de Bea, bilingue depuis sa naissance. Elle ne se basait ni sur la langue maternelle de son interlocuteur, ni sur la langue principale du lieu, mais sur la derni\u00e8re phrase entendue, et r\u00e9agissait \u00e0 celle-l\u00e0. Dans ce groupe, c\u2019\u00e9tait normal que tout le monde parle trois ou quatre langues \u00e0 la fois, et qu\u2019on les change parfois phrase par phrase. Donc je ne pense pas dans une langue pr\u00e9cise ; pour reprendre l\u2019exemple ci-dessus, quand j\u2019entends le mot \u00ab apple \u00bb, puis, l\u2019instant d\u2019apr\u00e8s, le mot \u00ab pomme \u00bb, il n\u2019y a pas de traduction qui se met en marche dans ma t\u00eate pour me dire qu\u2019on parle de pommes. Au moment o\u00f9 le mot est prononc\u00e9, ce qui surgit, c\u2019est une chose ronde et rouge que Blanche-Neige n\u2019aurait pas d\u00fb manger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">(C\u2019est un peu comme quand un tout-petit dit \u00ab ouaf-ouaf \u00bb. Je ne vais pas lui demander o\u00f9 il a vu ce cocker ; je vais r\u00e9pondre comme la question est venue : O\u00f9 est l\u2019ouaf ?)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00ab C\u2019est difficile pour toi de parler hongrois ? \u00bb<br>L\u00e0, c\u2019\u00e9tait la bonne question. Il faut que je me concentre. Ce n\u2019est pas difficile pour moi, au contraire\u2026 Je ne me rends juste pas compte quand je commence \u00e0 m\u00e9langer les choses. Je ne remarque que j\u2019utilise un ordre des mots tordu, fa\u00e7on latin, que lorsque les gens me regardent bizarrement. \u00c0 pr\u00e9sent, je dois me rappeler que l\u2019avantage du hongrois, c\u2019est qu\u2019on a un mot pour tout, donc je peux toujours formuler les choses simplement. Je cherche souvent le nom des choses. C\u2019est un peu comme si alma, pomme, apple et Apfel \u00e9taient des synonymes, et qu\u2019il n\u2019\u00e9tait pas du tout s\u00fbr que la version la plus pertinente soit la premi\u00e8re \u00e0 me venir \u00e0 l\u2019esprit.<br>Et bien s\u00fbr, il y a les m\u00eames exemples en fran\u00e7ais. Au bout d\u2019un moment, les coll\u00e8gues plaisantaient en disant que je pouvais tout commenter avec une phrase d\u2019un ou deux mots. Peut-\u00eatre que quelques instants plus t\u00f4t j\u2019\u00e9coutais un reportage en hongrois o\u00f9 l\u2019on pouvait aller droit au but, mais en fran\u00e7ais, ces m\u00eames r\u00e9ponses courtes ne seraient pas forc\u00e9ment assez claires.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00ab Nous n\u2019entendons pas l\u2019autre. \u00bb<br>Est-ce que moi, j\u2019entends ce que les autres disent ?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00ab Tu es seul. \u00bb<br>J\u2019\u00e9tais tomb\u00e9e sur cette phrase quelques jours plus t\u00f4t aussi. L\u00e0, je venais justement de lire que j\u2019\u00e9tais la seule, au caf\u00e9 de la place principale, \u00e0 boire mon vin chaud en solo. Mon souvenir \u00e0 moi, c\u2019est que le vin chaud \u00e9tait bon et le livre, passionnant. Donc, pour moi, cette soir\u00e9e-l\u00e0 \u00e9tait plut\u00f4t r\u00e9ussie. Pourtant, le monde tangible est peut-\u00eatre encore plus int\u00e9ressant que \u00e7a. Je ne sais pas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00ab Ce n\u2019est pas n\u00e9cessaire, je vais me d\u00e9brouiller. \u00bb<br>Parce que je peux me d\u00e9brouiller. Pour moi, ce n\u2019est pas grand-chose d\u2019\u00eatre autonome, de marcher une demi-heure s\u2019il le faut.
