2023 November 07.
TIME CLOCK<\/strong>
Five thirty. The first alarm clock has no chance. I run for the quarter past eight bus. I’m lucky with the train.
At nine o’clock I’m already having coffee in Avignon. Two hours of idleness and I discover the spice vendor in the market.
The international bus is delayed for an hour, during which time the cat by the lake becomes a first-class model for photographs.
Change in Montpellier.
Run with the Kfc chicken. Calorie scale out of balance.
On the second bus, I have to fight mouth karate for a seat. After all, it’s only a ten euro Flixbus, not Air France.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00a1VIVA LA BARCELONA!<\/strong>
I’m sweating out of my big coat. At the Arc de Triomphe I’m already getting dressed.
It’s the Arc de Triomphe that praises no one. It was built specifically for show. There are a few more like it around here. It’s a tourist paradise. A paradise on tourists’ money.
So many Chinese, it’s better to think of them as locals. The downtown street, where only Chinese work, is a testament to that. Except in the Chinese grocery store, I saw some South Americans there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

CHECKERED FLOOR PLAN, WAVY BUILDING<\/strong>
Here, too, I quickly realize that the colored lights are for tourists, and the crosswalk is crossed when only motorcycles or bicycles cross the road. Luckily, I was heavily trained in Naples in the liberal interpretation of zebra crossings and street signs.
I think the zebras are painted just to add a stripey colour to the chequered layout. There is such a regular square grid in the street grid that there shouldn’t even be street names and house numbers. A coordinate system would suffice. For example: fifth row, sixth house.
Even the sanitation workers follow a regular line pattern: an electric van drives in front, collecting the garbage (from the garbage cans, the ground, everywhere). A sprinkler truck arrives a little behind, mops the sidewalk, waters the flowers. Behind them comes the guy with the giant broom. That’s one way to keep a pedestrian street tidy!
Meanwhile, the city is bustling, the crowds are bustling. I drift on in Gaudi’s wake. There’s the Batll\u00f3 house. Entrance is just forty euros. How’s that supply and demand principle? In this paradise city, where tourists are rolling in – with money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My brother comes to mind and the times when I, the enthusiastic amateur, argue with the professional architect about the design. Because I don’t think it’s accepted in nature to have right angles, straight lines and grey, I say this because it’s typical of my brother’s style that everything is straight, right angles and grey. However, my brother has one thing in common with Gaudi: everything somehow always ends up in balance and it always turns out that these are just guiding principles.
I will explain another day that Gaudi was as good friends with the right angle as a vampire is with garlic. Gaudi may run the show, but let’s not forget that this city is much more than that. Right next to the Batll\u00f3 is the Amatler House, home of the once sensational chocolate maker.
To which, if I say another architectural gem, then Passeig de Gr\u00e1cia avenue is the most extraordinary necklace I’ve ever seen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
