Why is it good to go to St. Rémy?
-> For the French architecture. Where balconies without long terraces are covered by plane trees.
-> For the Provencal landscape. Lavender is planted everywhere visible for tourists. And along the road, dill blooms. The flower gardens smell of rosemary, and thyme basks at the base of fruit trees.
-> Pleasant, pedestrian-scale downtown. With the narrow streets and small squares that are so typical around here. All beautifully maintained.
-> You can also find the usual Roman-era relics here. There is a larger archaeological park on the outskirts of the city.
-> A secret little pond in the mountains. Which is actually a reservoir up high. There is a small cave nearby. Park your car at the highest point of the road leading to Les Baux. From there, it’s a twenty-minute walk to the pond, and you can walk around it in another half an hour. A beautiful afternoon picnic program.
-> Oh, and what you might not even notice is that the fresh forest air smells like Provencal herb blend perfume.
Why is the valley of Les Baux called the white valley?
Well, because the white limestone glows. Olive groves spread across the gentle slopes, surrounded by coniferous forests. From above, it looks as if we were laying down a bright green sheet, drawing olive green spots on it, and then sprinkling it all with white dots. You can’t get enough of it.
In Les Baux de Provence, it’s really great for wearing out a child. Also because nothing is horizontal. Lots of peaks, hiking trails, and a castle with a separate staircase to every building. You can imagine it as if we put the Visegrád Castle Hill over the downtown of Szentendre.

Pourquoi aller à Saint-Rémy ?
-> L’architecture française. Où les longs balcons sans terrasses sont couverts de platanes.
-> Pour les paysages de Provance. Pour les touristes, la lavande est plantée à chaque endroit visible. Et l’aneth fleurit le long des routes. Les jardins fleuris sentent le romarin, et le thym fleurit au pied des arbres fruitiers.
-> Un centre-ville agréable à l’échelle du piéton. Avec les rues étroites et les petites places qui nous sont si familières. Le tout, magnifiquement entretenu.
-> Les vestiges romains habituels sont également présents. Un grand parc archéologique se trouve à la périphérie de la ville.
-> Un lac secret dans les collines. Il s’agit en fait d’un réservoir situé en hauteur. Il y a une petite grotte à proximité. Il y a un parking au point le plus haut sur la route principale des Baux, garez-y votre voiture. De là, il y a vingt minutes de marche jusqu’au lac, et encore une demi-heure pour en faire le tour. Un magnifique pique-nique pour l’après-midi.
-> Oh, et ce que vous ne remarquerez même pas, c’est que l’air frais de la forêt est parfumé d’un mélange d’herbes de Provence.
Pourquoi la vallée des Baux est-elle appelée la vallée blanche ?
Parce que le calcaire blanc brille. Les oliveraies en pente douce sont entrecoupées de forêts de conifères. Vu d’en haut, c’est comme si on prenait une feuille vert vif, qu’on y dessinait des taches vert olive et qu’on remplissait le tout de points blancs. On ne peut pas s’en passer.
Les Baux de Provence sont un endroit idéal pour fatiguer un enfant. Ne serait-ce que parce que rien n’est horizontal. Beaucoup de collines, de chemins de randonnée, un château avec un escalier menant à chaque bâtiment. C’est un peu comme si on mettait la colline du château de Visegrád au-dessus du centre de Szentendre.

Miért jó St. Rémy városába menni?
-> Francia építészet miatt. Ahol a hosszára nyújtott terasz nélküli erkélyeket platánfák takarják.
-> Provance tájkép miatt. A turisták kedvéért minden látható helyre levendulát ültetnek. Az út szélén pedig kapor virágzik. A virágos kerteknek rozmaring illata van, a gyümölcsfa tövében pedig kakukkfű sütkérezik.
-> Kellemes, gyalogos léptékű belváros. Az errefelé oly’ megszokott szűk utcákkal, kis terekkel. Mindez, szépen karban tartva.
-> A szokásos római kori emlékekből itt is kapunk. A város határában van egy nagyobb régészeti park.
-> Titkos tavacska a hegyek között. Ami való­jában egy víztározó a magasban. Van a közelében egy kis barlang. A les Bauxba vezető főút legmagasabb pontján van parkoló, ott tedd le az autót. Onnan húsz perc séta a tó, egy újabb fél óra alatt körbe is járod. Gyönyörű délutáni piknik program.
-> Jah és ami már fel sem tűnik, hogy a friss erdei levegő provancei fűszerkeverék illatú parfümöt használ.
Hogy miért hívják a Les Baux völgyét fehér völgynek?
Hát azért, mert világít a fehér mészkő. A lankás lejtőkön terülő olíva ligeteket tűlevelű erdők fogják közre. Fentről úgy néz ki az egész, mintha fognánk egy élénk zöld lepedőt, amire olíva zöld foltokat rajzolunk, majd az egészet telehintenénk fehér pöttyökkel. Nem lehet betelni vele.
Les Baux de Provanceban tök jól lehet gyereket le fárasztani. Már csak azért is, mert semmi sem víz­szintes. Rengeteg hegycsúcs, sétaút, a vár aminek minden épületéhez külön lépcsősor vezet. Úgy lehet elképzelni, mintha Szentendre belvárosa fölé tennénk a visegrádi várhegyet.
