One Last Time. (Or Maybe Not)

Even a gloomy day can turn memorable when spent by the sea. My trip to Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer began with a visit to the local market, followed by a peaceful afternoon on the sandy beach – perhaps my last swim in the sea this season. Or maybe not?

The gloomy morning doesn’t stop me from heading to the beach. After much deliberation, I once again choose the relatively nearby sands of Saintes-Maries. By now, I’m not even surprised to find a market at the edge of the village when I arrive. I only spent forty euros because I didn’t have more cash on me. So, the well-priced beach towel and felt hat will have to wait.

Here’s what I bought: six pairs of socks, mini perfume, strawberries (a mistake this time of year), dried tomatoes, pickled garlic, sweet grapes, pickled artichokes, a bagel, and coffee.

Upon arriving at the overcast beach, my first move, of course, is to set up a picnic on a massive rock! I even doze off for a bit. After gathering the courage to swim in the empty beach, I decide to read instead.

The air is pleasant, and the clouds are starting to give way to the sun’s rays. In the end, I settle for collecting shells. I stroll in the water, pick up shells, and admire the jellyfish. While doing this, I realize the water isn’t as cold as I had assumed based on the deserted beach. It’s perfect for swimming.

I wish I could have more chances to swim in the sea!
