October 16, 1944. Up to this date, everything happens as it is written in history books. Then comes the „what if” question. What if, at the end of World War II, Hungary makes a separate peace with the Western powers, thus placing the country on the freer side of the Iron Curtain? Skyscrapers in the city center, four airport terminals in the 1960s. Csepel Island becomes a huge international port; the dock city balances on the border between the underworld and democracy. Miklós Horty, the son of the regent, becomes the president, and János Kádár is the chief of urban police.

We are in the 1960s, and the Beatles are performing at the People’s Stadium. At the beginning of the concert, one of the technicians dies. It turns out that the victim from Liverpool has Hungarian roots. The investigation is jointly conducted by the English and Hungarian police. There is also a romantic storyline, a wise mother, and plenty of folk songs.

This is a crime novel. This is a portrait of an era. This is fiction.

For example, Fenyő Miklós appears as the leader of the Jampec band, a beautiful blonde theater professional, and a grandmother-aged former teacher. There is also a discussion of religion, so it’s not surprising that Cardinal Mindszenty also appears.

Mostly, we are in Budapest, in skyscraper-like hotels and similar-looking city halls. We will also go boating off the western coast of Scotland. We will have sex on the top floor of the Menthol Hotel. My favorite is the swimming pool on the roof of the building on Attila Street.

The complication is that there are no clues for a long time. Then, when the whole crime becomes clear to the investigators, there is no evidence. However, a church curtain hides serious secrets. As a solution, I thought they would extract a confession from the suspect, but no. The romantic storyline is just the spice on the pages of the book. My favorite scene is related to this, which is simple when told: they sit at the edge of the pool.

I didn’t know I was a fan of crime novels until now. I can’t wait to start reading the sequel. I don’t know if there is a more clever set of answers to „what if” questions in this book.

My favorite was Vitéz, the four-legged friend, the loyal vizsla dog. I don’t know if there was a character I hated. There were negative characters, but none that I particularly despised. These are well-developed characters anyway.

This novel deserves the highest rating from me.

I bought it because I am interested in „what if” philosophies, even though I know that these are often unnecessary musings. However, the author turned it into an exciting crime novel in book form. The reason I continued reading beyond a paragraph was the architectural descriptions and the romantic storyline. The reason I didn’t want to put it down was the book’s subtle humor and light style.

What feelings did it evoke in me? It was great to imagine. This was a fantastic summer read for me. I simply felt good while reading – I mean, listening. Because I listened to the book like an audiobook. That’s why I didn’t jot down any quotes.

16 octobre 1944. Jusqu’à cette date, tout se déroule comme décrit dans les livres d’histoire. Ensuite, vient la question du „et si”. Et si, à la fin de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, la Hongrie concluait une paix séparée avec les puissances occidentales, plaçant ainsi le pays du côté le plus libre du rideau de fer ? Des gratte-ciel dans le centre-ville, quatre terminaux d’aéroport dans les années 60. L’île de Csepel devient un énorme port international ; le quai est une ville, équilibrant entre le monde souterrain et la démocratie. Le fils de Miklós Horty est président de la République, János Kádár est chef de la police urbaine.

Nous sommes dans les années 60, les Beatles donnent un concert au Stade du Peuple. Au début du concert, un technicien meurt. On découvre que la victime de Liverpool a des racines hongroises. L’enquête est menée conjointement par la police anglaise et hongroise. Il y a aussi un fil romantique, une mère sage, beaucoup de chansons folkloriques.

C’est un mystère. C’est une chronique de l’époque. C’est une fiction.

On y trouve par exemple Miklós Fenyő, chef de la bande Jampec, une belle professionnelle du théâtre blonde, une ancienne enseignante d’âge mûr. Il est aussi question de religion, donc ce n’est pas surprenant que le cardinal Mindszenty fasse une apparition.

Nous sommes principalement à Budapest, dans des hôtels ressemblant à des gratte-ciel et des mairies de même apparence. Nous irons aussi faire un tour en bateau sur la côte ouest de l’Écosse. Nous ferons l’amour au dernier étage de l’Hôtel Menthol. Mon préféré est la piscine sur le toit de l’immeuble d’Attila út.

Le problème est qu’il n’y a pas de pistes pendant longtemps. Puis, lorsque toute l’affaire est éclaircie pour les enquêteurs, il n’y a pas de preuves. Cependant, un rideau de temple cache de lourds secrets. Comme solution, je pensais qu’ils feraient avouer le suspect, mais non. Le fil romantique est juste l’épice des pages du livre. Ma scène préférée est liée à cela, et elle est simple : ils sont assis au bord de la piscine.

Je ne savais pas que j’aimais les romans policiers jusqu’à présent. J’ai hâte de commencer la suite. Je ne sais pas s’il existe une réponse plus astucieuse à la question du „et si” que ce livre.

Vitéz était mon préféré, l’ami à quatre pattes, le fidèle chien de chasse. Je ne sais pas s’il y avait un personnage que je détestais. Il y avait bien sûr des personnages négatifs, mais aucun ne m’a vraiment détesté. Ce sont de toute façon des personnages bien développés.

Ce roman mérite la meilleure note de ma part.

Je l’ai acheté parce que je m’intéresse aux philosophies du type „et si”, même si je sais que dans de nombreux cas, ce sont des spéculations inutiles. Mais sous forme de livre, l’auteur en a fait un mystère passionnant. Ce qui m’a poussé à continuer la lecture, ce sont les descriptions architecturales et le fil romantique. Ce qui m’a empêché de le poser, c’est l’humour subtil du livre et son style léger.

Quels sentiments cela a-t-il suscités en moi ? C’était super de rêver. C’était une excellente lecture estivale pour moi. Je me suis simplement senti bien en lisant – en fait, en écoutant. Parce que je l’ai écouté comme un livre audio. C’est pourquoi je n’ai pas pris de notes sur les citations.

1944. október 16. Eddig a dátumig minden úgy történik, ahogy az a történelemkönyvekben is meg van írva. Utána jön a mi lett volna, ha kérdés. Mi lett volna, ha a második világháború végén Magyarország különbékét köt a nyugati hatalmakkal, így az ország a vasfüggöny szabadabb oldalára kerül? Felhőkarcolók a belvárosban, négy repülőtéri terminál a hatvanas években. A Csepel sziget egy hatalmas nemzetközi kikötő; a dokk város, az alvilág és demokrácia határán egyensúlyoz. Horty Miklós fia köztársasági elnök, Kádár János a városi rendőrfőkapitány.

A hatvanas években járunk, a Beatles a Népstadionban koncertezik. A koncert kezdetén meghal az egyik technikus. A Liverpooli áldozatról kiderül, hogy magyar gyökerei vannak. A nyomozást az angol és a magyar rendőrség közösen folytatja. Emellett van egy romantikus szálunk, egy bölcs anyánk, sok-sok jampec nótánk.

Ez egy krimi. Ez egy korrajz. Ez egy fikció.

Feltűnik például Fenyő Miklós, mint Jampec bandavezér, egy gyönyörű szőke színházi szakember, egy nagymama korú egykori tanárnő. Szó lesz benne a vallásról, tehát nem meglepő, ha felbukkan Mindszenty bíboros is.

Többnyire Budapesten járunk, felhőkarcolószerű szállodákban és hasonló kinézetű városházában. Emellett fogunk csónakázni Skócia nyugati partjainál is. Fogunk szexelni a Hotel Menthol emeletén. Nekem a kedvencem az úszómedence az Attila úti társasház tetején.

A bonyodalmat az jelenti, hogy sokáig nincsenek nyomok. Majd amikor világossá válik a nyomozóknak az egész bűntény, akkor pedig nincsenek bizonyítékok. Habár, egy templomi függöny súlyos titkokat rejt. Megoldásként, én azt hittem kiverik a gyanúsítottból a vallomást, de nem. A romantikus szál, az már csak a fűszer a könyv lapjain. A kedvenc jelenetem is idekapcsolódik, mely elmondva egyszerű: ülnek a medence szélén.

Én eddig nem tudtam, hogy híve vagyok a krimi regényeknek. Már alig várom, hogy elkezdjem a folytatást olvasni. Nem tudom, létezik-e ennél a könyvnél frappánsabb válasz köteg a mi lett volna, ha kérdésekre.

Vitéz volt a kedvencem, a négylábú barát, a hűséges vizsla kutya. Nem tudom, volt-e olyan szereplő, akit utáltam. Nyilván voltak negatív karakterek, de kifejezetten utálatos nem igazán. Ezek, amúgy is szépen kidolgozott karakterek.

Megérdemli a legjobb osztályzatot tőlem ez a regény.

Azért vettem meg, mert engem érdekelnek a mi lett volna, ha kezdetű filozófiák – akkor is, ha tudom, hogy ezek sok esetben felesleges eszmefuttatások. Ám így könyv formájában, egy izgalmas krimit írt belőle a szerző. Amiért tovább olvastam egy bekezdésnél azok az építészeti leírások, illetve a romantikus szál. Amiért nem akartam letenni az a visszafogott humora a könyvnek és a könnyed stílusa.

Milyen érzéseket keltett bennem? Tök jó volt képzelődni. Nekem ez egy nagyszerű nyári olvasmány volt. Egyszerűen jól éreztem magam olvasás – akarom mondani, hallgatás közben. Ugyanis, mint egy hangoskönyvet hallgattam végig a könyvet. Ezért sem jegyzeteltem ki idézeteket.
