“Pull on a condom! Don’t let the dirt get pregnant.” This has become a common phrase lately. No guests, no tasks. We clean and make excellent staff meals. As usual, in gloves.

Today I had to work with the Indian kid again. As soon as I could, I sent him away. It’s pointless to have two cooks for zero guests. If tomorrow, for the hundredth time, they ask me if I like the guy, instead of my usual one-word answer, I’ll say, “Of course, I like him. When he’s asleep. In the cemetery. Under a nettle bush. Two meters deep.”

The countdown is really on. I admit, I’m not looking forward to it. It’s likely that I’ll be going back to Hungary. Into communism. However, if I search for my new job starting from there, it’s not even certain that I’ll be looking in France, or even Europe. In other words, not just here. I will definitely check out Iceland.

It’s half past eleven in the evening, and I’m listening to new songs. It’s interesting how these new tracks are only one and a half to three minutes long. Thirty years ago, they used to be three to five minutes. The world is changing, we have less and less time to discover beauty in one thing. Nevertheless, I believe that today and everything is good.

24 octobre 2023, mercredi.

“Mets un préservatif ! Ne laisse pas la saleté tomber enceinte.” C’est devenu une phrase courante ces derniers temps. Pas de clients, pas de tâches. Nous faisons le ménage et préparons de superbes repas pour le personnel. Comme d’habitude, en portant des gants.

Aujourd’hui, j’ai encore dû travailler avec le garçon indien. Dès que j’ai pu, je l’ai renvoyé. C’est inutile d’avoir deux cuisiniers pour zéro client. Si demain, pour la centième fois, on me demande si j’apprécie le gars, au lieu de ma réponse habituelle en un mot, je dirai, “Bien sûr, je l’apprécie. Quand il dort. Dans le cimetière. Sous un buisson d’orties. À deux mètres de profondeur.”

Le compte à rebours avance rapidement. J’avoue, je n’attends pas avec impatience. Il est probable que je retourne en Hongrie. Dans le communisme. Cependant, si je cherche mon nouveau travail à partir de là, il n’est même pas certain que je chercherai en France, ou même en Europe. En d’autres termes, pas seulement ici. Je vais certainement jeter un coup d’œil en Islande.

Il est minuit et demi, et j’écoute de nouvelles chansons. C’est intéressant de voir comment ces nouvelles pistes ne durent que de une minute et demie à trois minutes. Il y a trente ans, elles faisaient trois à cinq minutes. Le monde change, nous avons de moins en moins de temps pour découvrir la beauté en une chose. Néanmoins, je crois que aujourd’hui et tout est bien.

Húzzál gumit! Nehogy teherbe essen a kosz. Ez egy jellemző mondat mostanság. Vendég nincs, feladat nincs. Takarítunk, szuper szemé­lyzeti kajákat csinálunk. Szokás szerint Kesztyűben.
Ma megint az indiai gyerekkel kellett együtt dolgoznom. Amint lehetett, elküldtem. Felesleges a nulla vendéghez két konyhás. Ha holnap, századjára is megkérdezik, hogy kedvelem-e a srácot, akkor a szokásos egy szavas válasz helyett megmondom, hogy persze, hogy kedvelem. Amikor alszik. A temetőben. Egy csallán bokor alatt. Két méter mélyen.
Nagyon megy már a visszaszámlálás. Bevallom, nem várom. Az a valószínű, hogy vissza megyek Magyarországra. A kommunizmusba. Viszont, ha onnan kiindúlva keresem az új állásom, akkor nem is biztos, hogy Franciaország, vagy Európában fogok keresni. Vagyis, nem csupán itt. Izlandot mindenképp meg fogom nézni.
Este fél tizenkettő, épp új zeneszámokat hall­gatok. Milyen érdekes, ezek az új zenék másfél – három percesek. Harminc éve még három – öt percesek voltak. Változik a világ, egyre kevesebb időnk van egy – egy dologban felfedezni a szépet. Azért, én hiszek benne, hogy ma és minden jó.
