On My Own After All?
Sometimes life forces you to take control, even when you were previously asked not to be independent. Today’s lesson: lack of communication and leadership dodging responsibility never ends well, but you can still handle the situation when you’re forced into it.
The maintenance worker informed me on Wednesday evening that he wouldn’t be working until Monday. I should have suspected a change, as I had already received three notifications from the work schedule app that my schedule had been modified, but I ignored them because online work schedules rarely match reality.
On Wednesday evening, I confronted the director to clarify how our opening hours and my work schedule would look. As it turned out, we were expecting very few guests, so the restaurant would also have special hours, and the maintenance worker would be on leave. When I asked why no one told me and when I’d get back my lost day off, I was met with evasion. I hate this the most! I expect a company leader to communicate honestly and transparently in all matters. But here, this guy is just playing games. I can already tell there will be problems with him in the future…
So, I’ve been left here for four days without instructions, even though I was previously asked not to act independently. But now, I have no choice. Every morning, I walked around the property and made a task list. Then, when they asked during the day what I was doing (because they were closely watching my work), I read the list aloud. I said that if they didn’t like it, they could let me know; but no one did. They let me do my own thing. I must admit, I’m quite pleased with myself.
Tomorrow, I have my day off for the week, and the maintenance worker arrives. I’m curious to see what they will criticize me for on Tuesday morning. Because I’m sure the maintenance guy will check everything tomorrow and complain to the boss. I’m ready for it—I’ve done everything I could.
