I Couldn’t Translate It

While learning languages, we often experience moments when our brain switches to thinking directly in the foreign language instead of translating. I recently found myself in just such a situation.

The guest said in German that they were staying in room 26. Zahia looked at me because she didn’t understand. I do know how to count in French, but instead of translating the German sentence, I immediately started counting the room doors in German.

It feels like I never really think about translations anymore – I just start thinking in the given language.
